Job Overview

Reporting to the manager, portfolio and development for Fort Hills, you will work directly with technical, operations and functional teams to understand, review, and document risks and opportunities, and to assist in developing creative and strategic approaches to managing them.

Key Accountabilities

  • Coordinate the overall Operational Excellence Management System (OEMS) self-assessment program for Fort Hills in addition to participating in self-assessment activities for specific elements, and contributing to the delivery of the annual Management Review
  • Provide risk management coaching and facilitation support to Fort Hills Operations, including assisting with the delivery of quarterly and annual Critical Risk Reviews to leadership
  • Maintain an inventory of OEMS implementations and other corporate initiatives, thereby creating a view to change impact experienced by the business, and ensuring Fort Hills compliance with OEMS requirements and standards
  • Contribute to the planning, execution and stewardship of the audits and assessments program for Fort Hills Operations, in collaboration with the Upstream Audits and Assessments team
  • Provide/ champion structured change management, continuous improvement and governance processes
  • Maintain a foundational understanding of Suncor’s business model and be considered an expert practitioner and instructor of Suncor’s risk standards and procedures
  • Perform various coordinating tasks for risk management, management of change, and self-assessments
  • Build relationships with cross-functional teams and leadership
  • Promote the development of positive risk management culture, in partnership with the Fort Hills Operations team and Enterprise Risk Management
  • Support the Senior Advisor - Risk in maintaining the Fort Hills Risk documentation including information within the Enablon risk module
  • Train risk practitioners in using the Suncor Risk Matrix

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education

  • Six or more years of experience in leading/coordinating cross-functional groups and/or experience in a relevant business area
  • Experience with risk management principles and processes 
  • Experience with oil sands business and processes is considered an asset
  • Audit experience is an asset
  • Post-secondary education in engineering, business, environmental science or finance is required

Skills and Knowledge

  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to partner with risk practitioners and stakeholders in a creative process that inspires them to adopt improved risk management practices in their work
  • Strong listening, communication, problem solving, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work with multi-discipline, cross-functional teams and work in a dynamic and time constrained environment
  • Continuous improvement mindset with strong analytical and decision-making capacity with the demonstrated ability to lead multiple and changing priorities under tight deadlines with strong prioritizing skills
  • Ability to clearly set expectations, ground rules and boundaries to ensure risk identification and assessment sessions meet the intended objective

Working Conditions

  • This is a Calgary-based role, which will require periodic travel to the Fort Hills site
