Job Overview

Reporting to the team leader, case management you will be an active member of a team responsible for reviewing employee short term disability (STD) benefit claim applications and facilitating an employee’s timely, safe and sustainable return to work. You will play an active role in managing a high volume of applications to facilitate the development and implementation of short term modified work assignments.

Key Accountabilities

  • Gather and assess both medical and non-medical information pertaining to an employee’s health event for the purpose of determining if the request for a medical leave and/or modified duties is medically supported and for settling overall fitness for work
  • Determine and communicate an employee’s eligibility for STD benefits at onset and for the initial 30 day time period of the claim, if applicable
  • Identify and communicate restrictions and limitations, and where appropriate, develop a short duration transitional return to work plan to facilitate an employee’s return to work
  • Educate and inform key partners on the requirements of the integrated disability management (IDM) program, including roles and responsibilities, expectations and consequences
  • Actively identify risks associated with employee health events
  • Identify risks in association with human rights, labour and employee relations, and worker compensation premium impacts

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education:

  • 2 or more years of claims or disability management experience
  • Certification in disability management is preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in human sciences, kinesiology, physiotherapy, nursing, or equivalent education
  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Thorough knowledge of human rights, privacy and other applicable legislation
  • Strong Microsoft Office suite computer and familiarity with Medgate is an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with conflict and emotionally charged situations
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills
  • Strong ability to influence without authority
