Business Development Manager, Wind and Biofuels

Job Overview

Reporting to the director, business development – renewable energy, you will be accountable for building a robust pipeline of renewable power development opportunities for Suncor in the short, medium and long term, across various geographies but primarily focused on Alberta.

Key Accountabilities

  • Identify, recommend and negotiate renewable project opportunities and lead (non-authoritative) groups of 10 or more individuals in due diligence review of those opportunities
  • Secure future projects for Suncor and negotiate definitive agreements with counterparties
  • Work closely with internal teams for a smooth transition through permitting and project construction
  • Monitor the constantly changing environment for new opportunities
  • Build a robust pipeline of potential value-added opportunities which align with Suncor’s direction / objectives, including: greenfield development, operating assets, or corporate acquisitions; partnership opportunities with other industry players or First Nation groups; divestitures
  • Lead highly technical multi-disciplinary teams through influence (ie: engineering, legal, tax, regulatory, marketing, contracts, land, stakeholder and Aboriginal relations, finance)

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education:

  • Minimum 7 years technical and / or commercial experience in the renewable energy or power industry
  • Experience structuring and negotiating contracts for power purchase agreements, purchase and sale agreements, and / or limited partnership agreements
  • Degree in engineering, finance or similar; MBA is an asset
  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Able to organize, develop and present project proposals, conclusions, and recommendations to senior management
  • Ability to manage complex due diligence review processes and keep track of detail while maintaining focus on top issues
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross functional teams in a matrix organization and address complex opportunities and changing market dynamics
  • Proven ability to deliver under tight timelines and changing business needs
  • Strong team player
  • Organized, adaptable, and self-motivated

Working Conditions

  • This position is based in Calgary, Alberta at the Suncor Energy Centre
  • Occasional travel required
