Cloud Tools & Automation Specialist

We’re growing our Calgary-based Cloud and Infrastructure team and need an experienced cloud professional to bring deep knowledge and a passion for all things tech. You will support a multi-cloud platform and on-premise server environment. You will leverage your expertise to contribute to the successful transition from outsource to in-house IT, ensuring stable operations of our large server environment. You will then have opportunities to build new solutions such as automation and new features/capabilities in the cloud. This is an exciting time to join our Cloud Platform team, which is responsible for all “build” and “run” work within our cloud environments, and a great opportunity to stretch and grow your expertise in the cloud space!

You will use your expertise to:

  • Be value senior member of the Cloud Tools & Automation Team which is responsible for automation, monitoring and compliance within the Cloud & Infrastructure Platform
  • Help modernize and automate monitoring, compliance, server provisioning, etc
  • Participate in road mapping activities
  • Resolve operational incidents, lead root cause analysis, and participate in On-Call rotation (focused on cloud tools, not server support)
  • Lead opportunities to streamline and improve operational processes, and automate where possible
  • Handle and approve changes to our infrastructure environment, minimize risk and operational impacts and ensure that we mitigate and understand cross-functional impacts to other infrastructure components
  • Work on assigned project tasks related to cloud tools & automation
  • Build and mature automation IaaC framework for deployments and operational activities
  • Work with business teams to assess solution requirements, create solution designs, and execute on build activities
  • Help manage cloud and on-premises infrastructure security, audits, and industry compliance as well as operational monitoring of policy and process compliance
  • Take training on new technologies (cloud, automation, monitoring) to ensure the latest technologies are used to increase efficiency across all Suncor teams

We’d like to review your application if you have…

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Hands on experience with infrastructure operations and architecture, including enterprise size cloud computing, converged infrastructure systems, and operational automation and management
  • 10+ years experience designing, building and operating Windows Server
  • Experience supporting and maintaining at least two of the following technologies in a large environment: Azure, AWS, VMware vSphere/vROPs/vRA, Citrix, Unix/Linux, MS SCOM, GitHub, Ansible Tower, Terraform
  • Experience in IaaC, PowerShell scripting and Terraform automation (coding)
  • Alignment with our values: safety above all else, stronger together, operational discipline, curiosity and lifelong learning, and act with integrity
  • The ability to effectively communicate (verbal and written) to a wide variety of audiences including multi-functional teams at all levels

Preference for:

  • Hands-on cloud experience in large environments (Azure or AWS)
  • Hands-on experience with Service Now and Jira
  • Experience migrating from traditional on-premises to cloud services
  • Demonstrated experience in monitoring using Datadog
  • Demonstrated experience in automation using Ansible, Terraform, Azure ARM
  • Certification in Administration or Architecture for AWS or Azure
  • Experience in the oil and gas industry

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other important information:

  • You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Ave S.W.
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs
