Drilling Engineer

Job Overview

Reporting to the director, drilling engineering you will be part of a team of engineers and technologists responsible for drilling engineering and well design aspects within oil sands mines and thermal areas.

Key Accountabilities

  • Execute scope of work through high quality planning, detailed technical design, operating practices and cost estimates for vertical, deviated/slant and horizontal wells (core, observation, geotechnical, water source, disposal and SAGD wells)
  • Drilling technical focal point for interactions with reservoir, geology, production and rig operations
  • Investigate new drilling technologies for project implementation. Execute on new ideas and follow through with documented findings and recommendations
  • Provide well control and emergency planning response expertise
  • Handles multiple projects in a fast paced environment and be open to constant challenge and change
  • Liaise with multiple internal and external stakeholders including asset teams, regulatory, surface land, logistics, completions and operations
  • Ensure regulatory requirements and reporting are met
  • Provide mentorship and technical support to junior technical staff
  • Project management of drilling projects - quality control and track performance of safety, cost, schedule, quality
  • Actively review EH&S guidelines and demonstrate a proactive, safety based work ethic

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education

  • Seven to ten years drilling experience, preferably in oil sands and in situ drilling
  • Experience in mentoring junior staff and working in a multi-functional team
  • Knowledgeable of regulatory requirements, industry recommended practices, well control procedures and well licensing
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering
  • Registered as a P.Eng or eligible for registration immediately with APEGA

Skills and Knowledge

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite, familiarity with Peloton Wellview, Accumap and SAP is beneficial
  • Strong listening skills along with exceptional written and oral communications abilities
  • Strong initiative, problem solving and proven project management skills
  • Ability to work in multi-functional team environment
  • Highly motivated teammate, adapts to change, open to new ideas and responsibilities
  • Self-starter with well-developed interpersonal and organizational skills in order to handle numerous projects within a tight timeframe

Working Conditions

  • This position is based in Calgary, Alberta at the Suncor Energy Centre
  • On-call duties to support drilling operations
  • Regular field visits to provide support and technical assistance
