Environment and Regulatory Advisor

In this role you will report to the Manager of Environment and Regulatory Compliance, where you will oversee the management of the Regulatory Compliance (RC) tool for Suncor sites located in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo as well as site legal registries. You will also determine appropriateness of due diligence action to satisfy regulatory obligations, conduct appropriate stewardship to report on RC tool performance, and assess the applicability of new legislation to Suncor Assets.

You will use your expertise to:

  • Oversee and manage the RC Tool and Legal Registries, including adjusting/adding task information, emerging regulation requirements and stewarding the Regulatory Controls business processes governing usage of the RC Tool
  • Ensure regulatory requirements that have been identified are added to, interpreted and assigned in the RC Tool
  • Implement applicable regulatory compliance findings from gate reviews, assessments and incident investigations
  • Review and assess the applicability of any new regulations on Suncor Assets
  • Coach and mentor employees, project managers, directors and general managers on their responsibilities and accountabilities
  • Contribute to regular stewardship and analysis of RC tool performance
  • Provide enforcement of the due diligence test when applying proof of compliance to regulatory obligations
  • Handle data collection and reporting Green House Gas Emissions for the site including Fort Hills contribution to sustainability reporting
  • Lead Fort Hills adherence to Mining Association of Canada (MAC) mandate towards sustainable mining
  • Handle the supply chain process for contractors that the environment team brings to site, including Scope of Work development, Hazard ID checklist and review of training requirements

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Two years in a regulatory and environment role assessing and applying provincial and federal environmental regulatory acts and legislations
  • Knowledge of how operating businesses function along with how operations controls are used to handle work processes
  • A Bachelor’s degree or diploma in a related field
  • A deep understanding of Microsoft Office products, specifically Excel
  • The ability to use independent discernment and analytical skills to resolve problems with exceptional communication and facilitation skills
  • Strong collaboration with others in order to achieve the best results and deliver the most value
  • Continually seek greater knowledge about the systems, processes and hazards in the workplace, in order to understand not just what you do but why you do it
  • Constantly ask what could go wrong and check for out-of-the-ordinary conditions and learn to anticipate potential problems
  • Alignment with our values of: safety above all else, respect, raise the bar, commitments matter and do the right thing

Preference for:

  • Science or Engineering experience

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other meaningful information:

  • You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Ave S.W.
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday
