Job Overview

Reporting to the manager, geotechnical engineering, this person is responsible for the geotechnical aspects of waste dumps, reclamation stockpiles, tailing facilities (dykes), and pitwall structures that are associated with both mining and closure landform applications.  You will be responsible for managing geotechnical risks across the site in both operating and closure environments, as well as our tailings facility management system which promotes all aspects of risk reduction and continuous improvement in tailings facility management and dam safety.

Key Accountabilities

  • Deliver and manage complex engineering designs for dykes, pitwalls and dumps/stockpiles suitable for submission to government for approval
  • Work at various levels of projects from conceptual to detailed design as required for the stage of the project: design, construction, operations, closure and de-licensing
  • Liase with stakeholders including planners, regulatory, projects, operations (mining and tailings), and construction groups to deliver safe, robust and reliable engineering designs. 
  • Be part of a team to deliver the project for Suncor’s best interests and problem solve issues that arise in the field
  • Complete projects as a delivery of IFC to stakeholders
  • Manage technical issues and ensure geotechnical integrity through all of the life cycle stages of structures, design, construction, operations, closure, de-licensing
  • Work on technical projects such as weak pre-sheared soils, liquefiable material, fine tailings all within an operating environment.
  • Present projects to external review boards for risk identification
  • Work within the geotechnical group to continually improve our standards, procedures and dam safety programs
  • Mentor junior and intermediate staff in all aspects of geotechnical engineering, communication and project management as it applies
  • Contribute to technical advancement of staff in other groups
  • Work with external technical groups for the advancement of geotechnical and tailings engineering

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education

  • Minimum 10 years relevant engineering experience in large civil earthworks projects, which include, design, construction and operations
  • Experience in the oil and gas or mining environment is strongly preferred
  • Engineering degree in Civil/Geological/Mining engineering, Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering considered an asset
  • Presently registered or eligible to register immediately as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)
  • Possess a valid driver’s licence with a clean driving record

Skills and Knowledge

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite, AutoCAD and geotechnical modelling software (Geostudio, FLAC, etc.)
  • Effective communicator that is capable of understanding, anticipating and responding to the ongoing needs of mining, tailings and reclamation engineering and operations groups. (ie.  strong technical, oral and written communication skills.)
  • Proven project management skills and leadership abilities, including skills in developing and managing the performance of professional engineers, and building effective engineering work processes
  • Well-developed critical thinking, with an ability to apply logic and challenge assumptions, conclusions and make appropriate recommendations
  • You continually seek greater knowledge about the systems, processes and hazards in the workplace, in order to understand not just what you do but why you do it
  • You hold others accountable and expect others to do the same
  • Ability to contribute to a team environment while at times working independently

Working Conditions

  • This is a Calgary based office position
  • Occasional trips to site are required
