Geotechnical Engineer of Record

Reporting to the Manager, Geotechnical Engineering, this person is responsible for managing the geotechnical risks associated with waste dumps, tailing facilities (dams), and mine pit walls through their lifecycle.  The Geotechnical Engineer of Record (GEoR) is Suncor’s subject matter expert on the geotechnical aspects of these mine and tailings structures within their assigned area of accountability at Suncor. To accomplish this responsibility, the GEoR works closely with the design consultant (Designer of Record) and is knowledgeable of all design, construction and performance information.


The GEoR falls under the oversight of the Geotechnical Engineering Advisor for support and senior technical accountability.  Other supporting resources for this role include an organizational matrix of geotechnical engineering roles including peer GEoRs, the Resident Geotechnical Engineer(RGE) responsible for construction QA, the site Dam Safety Engineer (DSE) and various other supporting engineers.


Suncor’s geotechnical engineering roles, including the GEoR role, are registered professional engineers with APEGA and function within the geotechnical governance system of standards, practices, procedures, and management systems.  Suncor’s geotechnical governance systems follows industry leading practices and are in alignment with Alberta’s Dam & Canal Safety Directive, Canadian Dam Safety guidelines, and the management practices of the Mining Association of Canada.

You will use your expertise to:

  • Engage and manage Geotechnical Designers of Record (Consultants) in the development of effective designs for Suncor’s critical geotechnical structures.
  • Manage design work for their structures so that it meets the regulatory, operating, and sustainability requirements of Suncor while:
    • meeting the design objectives and project timelines.
    • communicating design developments and working effectively with mine and tailings planning groups to advance designs.
  • Provide detailed design reports for regulatory applications.
  • Manage the quality and completeness of the IFC drawings which meets constructability and execution requirements.
  • Support the RGE in managing construction quality assurance for ongoing construction.
  • Support the DSE in managing performance of structures.
  • Manage the work of any supporting staff acting on the behalf of the GEoR for quality and completeness.
  • Mentor supporting staff to aid in their technical development and advancement.

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Minimum 10 years relevant engineering experience in large civil earthworks projects, which include, design, construction, performance and operations.
  • Minimum 10 years applicable experience in Dam Safety.
  • Engineering degree in Civil/Geological/Mining engineering, Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering considered an asset
  • Presently registered or eligible to register immediately as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite, and capability with AutoCAD and geotechnical modelling software considered an asset (Geostudio, FLAC, etc.).
  • Effective communicator with strong technical, oral and written communication skills.
  • Proven project management skills and leadership abilities, at the level required for the GEoR role.
  • Ability to work independently while participating as an integral team member.
  • Able to see the strategic perspective while having well-developed critical thinking and being able to apply logic and challenge assumptions.
  • You hold others accountable and expect others to do the same
  • Possess a valid driver’s licence with a clean driving record

Preference for:

  • Knowledge of Suncor’s Technology and Innovation Management System (TIMS) and Asset Development & Execution Model (ADEM) as related to technology advancement and assessment 
  • Experience leading technical teams, formal or informal
  • Proven ability to break down large, complex problems into manageable tasks
  • Experience in technology development from proof of concept to pilot design (such as through a technology incubator or start-up)
  • A strong quantitative background in problem solving using creativity and sound judgement
  • A continuous improvement mindset and the curiosity to seek greater knowledge and understanding of the systems, process and hazards in the workplace

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other important information:

  • You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Ave S.W.
  • Occasional travel to site is required
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday
