Indirect Tax Specialist

Are you a highly motivated, hardworking professional aspiring to grow in a technical specialist and leadership capacity?  Do you have leadership experience in managing technical indirect tax professionals and consultants?  We are looking for a specialist who is technically proficient in Canadian fuel tax/commodity tax and the accounting systems that support these compliance areas, to join our team.   In this role and reporting to the Director, Commodity and Property Tax, you will support various facets of Suncor’s indirect tax group function with accounting systems, fuel tax and commodity tax compliance, regulatory audit and business advisory services. 

You will use your expertise to:

  • Provide expert advice in respect of Canadian commodity tax/fuel tax information systems including SAP,  fuel and commodity tax systems
  • Provide expert technical advice in respect of Canadian fuel, excise and carbon taxes as well as GST, HST, QST, PST
  • Manage indirect tax professionals and/or consultants that support Suncor’s Canadian commodity tax compliance function
  • Communicate with business stakeholders on the indirect tax impacts to their business and support their needs
  • Manage workload and compliance deadlines in a dynamic work environment
  • Support the Director, Commodity and Property Tax,   Suncor’s Canadian Indirect Tax function

We’d like to review your application if you have…

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Five years of related experience providing technical advice in the areas of Canadian indirect taxes with emphasis on fuel taxes and/or supporting indirect tax compliance software
  • Two years of related experience in managing technical professionals or technical consultants.
  • An undergraduate degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or equivalent
  • Recent and significant “hands on” experience with SAP accounting systems and excellent proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word
  • In depth knowledge of the indirect tax compliance function including tax return preparation and audit controversy roles
  • A problem solver approach utilizing critical thinking, good judgment, proficient in multitasking, and shown ability to make important decisions
  • Ability to think and act strategically with foresight in situations of heightened risk, sensitivity or conflict with ability to make important decisions
  • Team player attitude with demonstrated ability to establish and effectively develop relations and outstanding written and verbal communication skills

Preference for:

  • Canadian Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation; or a Masters of Business Administration (MBA), or a Legal designation (LLB)
  • Technical experience with volumetric tax engines such as Avalara and sales tax engines such as One Source/Sabrix
  • Significant technical experience with Canadian fuel taxes and carbon taxes

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other meaningful information:

  • You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Ave S.W combined with remote work arrangements in response to COVID-19
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday
  • Some travel may be required to operational sites and to technical tax course/conferences
