Job Overview

Reporting to the director legal affairs of oil sands, in situ and Fort Hills, you will provide legal advice and support with respect to all regulatory matters associated with Suncor's in situ and oil sands projects.

Key Accountabilities

  • Provide legal advice covering a broad scope of regulatory issues with a focus on regulatory applications and approvals, Alberta Energy Regulator, Alberta Utilities Commission matters, environmental and occupational health and safety matters
  • Support the regulatory group in drafting and development of regulatory applications, interpretation of approvals and interfacing with applicable regulatory agencies
  • Provide legal support and guidance concerning regulatory compliance with applicable legislation and regulatory approvals
  • Offer legal expertise to emergency response situations and privileged and confidential incident investigations including environmental and occupational health and safety incidents
  • Proactively identify and manage areas of legal and regulatory risk

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education:

  • Minimum five year Bar call
  • Heavy focus and specialization on regulatory law with experience with large scale oil and gas projects is preferred
  • LLB or equivalent and membership in Law Society of Alberta

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Familiarity with key regulatory statutes and regulations including the Responsible Energy Development Act, Alberta Energy Regulatory, Directives and Rules of Practice, Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, Wildlife Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act and Code, Oil Sands Conservation Act, Oil and Gas Conservation Act, Water Act, Public Lands Act, Mines and Mineral Act, Pipeline Act, Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, Canadian Environmental Protection Act, Fisheries Act, Canada Wildlife Act, Migratory Birds Convention Act,  Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act, Surface Rights Act
  • Ability to synthesize a wide range of principles, issues, needs and outcomes, balancing legal, commercial and other issues (people impacts, company reputation, and others)
  • You are a high achieving individual with strong academic background and solid career development to date
  • You have a high degree of flexibility and the ability to readily adapt to changes in Suncor's business priorities and plans
  • Innovative and creative problem solver with a demonstrated ability to work in a team environment towards achieving a desired business outcome within corporate and legal parameters
  • You possess exceptional interpersonal and communication skills

Working Conditions

  • This position is based in Calgary, Alberta at the Suncor Energy Centre
  • Periodic travel to Fort McMurray may be required
