Manager, Joint Venture Audit

Job Overview

As a key member of the vendor audit leadership team and reporting to the director, vendor audit, you will provide overall leadership and direction for the joint venture audit function across Suncor, ensuring a high level of quality and consistency of joint venture (JV) and joint interest (JI) audits. You will take the lead role in developing an enterprise-wide audit plan, and applying expertise to ensure audit learnings and recommendations drive efficiencies and continuous improvement.

Key Accountabilities

  • Leadership role managing employee and third party audit resources, tools and technology to support the execution of joint venture and joint interest audits.
  • Through the execution of the audit schedule, highlighting occurrences of contract non-compliance and specific control weaknesses as well as providing independent recommendations for improvement in controls and processes.
  • Overseeing audit assignments including scheduling, monitoring performance of employees and consultants, and reviewing and signing off on audit reports to ensure compliance with standards and procedures.
  • Manage the JV audit plan criteria and develop a 1 year and 2 year audit plan
  • With accountabilities to the JV audit steering committee (including senior management (VP and EVP)), present audit highlights and themes and deliver upcoming audit schedules
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships and communication channels with various stakeholders in the business units including frontline, mid-level, and senior leaders

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education

  • University degree accompanied by a professional accounting designation and/or certified internal auditor designation or equivalent education
  • 10 or more years’ experience preferably in a large oil and gas environment with broad knowledge of audit practices and procedures preferred
  • Previous leadership experience

Skills and Knowledge

  • Deep understanding of joint venture and joint interest accounting and  best practices within joint venture auditing globally
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret large and complex contracts
  • Ability to evaluate opportunities for improvement and provide recommendations
  • Preparing and presenting audit findings and recommendations in audit reports
  • Knowledge/experience of/with technical systems including SAP, auditing tools and techniques, microsoft office products, and understanding of other ERP systems that may be used by JV/JI operators
  • Strong leadership, integrity,  the ability to liaise with diverse stakeholders across the organization and influence without authority
  • Exceptional written, oral and telephone communication skills including dynamic presentation, influencing, conflict resolution, contract and negotiation skills

Working Conditions

  • This position is to be based in Calgary, Alberta at Suncor Energy Centre
  • This position may require some travel for extended periods of time
