Manager, Tax Compliance

Job Overview

Reporting to the director, tax compliance, you will provide tax compliance advice and ensure completion of consolidated financial statements and the legal entity income tax return filings for Suncor Energy Inc. (SEI) and its subsidiaries.

Key Accountabilities

  • Accountable for the accurate completion and timely reporting of the quarterly tax provision of  applicable business unit
  • Responsible for the completion and filing of the corporation’s subsidiary legal entity tax returns and partnership tax information returns by the legislated filing deadlines
  • Initiate allocation of work among analysts ensuring efficiency, timeliness and effectiveness of the overall corporate tax function
  • Manage the Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) program to ensure claims are completed on time to be claimed on the annual tax return
  •  Manage the external consultants who assist with the scoping of potential SR&ED projects, review supporting documentation for the claim, draft project descriptions and provide presentations to new technology projects
  • Provide mentorship, guidance and support to tax analysts within the team, providing timely performance updates and effective feedback

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education:

  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive business experience, in the area of income tax compliance, preferably in the tax department of a major international company or a public accounting firm within a Canadian Upstream / Downstream and related business
  • Progressive experience within and demonstration across broad commercial, operational and financial experience
  • Bachelor degree in finance or accounting
  • Completed the CPA’s in-depth tax courses and the Oil & Gas Taxation courses.
  • Professional designation preferred (i.e. CFA, MBA, P.Eng, Economics, Accounting)

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Ability to grasp key commercial considerations that may impact operations, financial results or which present a potential risk to the business/function
  • Thorough understanding of IFRS accounting and reporting rules and Canadian Income Tax Act  with a deep understanding of the Canadian SR&ED program
  • Deep understanding of SAP
  • Basic understanding of T2 Taxprep software
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, particularly in the areas of influencing senior management and change management with a proven ability to prepare, engage and deliver materials
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills
  • Able to develop relationships, gain credibility and collaborate effectively with finance and business stakeholders to drive business performance and manage risk
