Paralegal, Downstream Canada

We are looking for an experienced paralegal to join our dynamic Downstream Canada legal team. In this role, you will provide legal support and commercial input on a broad range of matters relating to our asset management team in the province of Ontario.

You may use your expertise to:

  • Prepare or review legal documents pertaining to real-estate and commercial transactions for the province of Ontario, including purchase and sale agreements, leases, mortgages, easements, and releases
  • Communicate with external stakeholders, including registries, government agencies and third-party legal advisors
  • Explain and train members of Suncor's business units on legal documentation templates, and participate in standardizing legal documents and processes
  • Conduct various Personal Property, Land Register and Teraview searches, and participate in real estate due diligence
  • Prepare and register notices (leases, mortgages, agreements, environmental regulatory notices)
  • Prepare various corporate documents (declarations, forms, resolutions, notices)
  • Knowledge management, including the organization of the group precedents and the updating of internal directories
  • Proactively identify and manage areas of legal risk
  • Support our legal counsel on other related tasks

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Eight years of experience as Paralegal or Law Clerk in a similar position
  • Drafting and legal research skills
  • Excellent organization skills, management of priorities and deadlines
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work well both independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • A high degree of flexibility and ability to readily adapt to changes in Suncor's business priorities and plans
  • The ability to manage a diverse workload in a fast-paced and dynamic environment

Preference for:

  • Experience in searching Ontario land record database (Teraview) and conducting and reviewing Ontario Personal Property Securities Act registrations
  • Paralegal or Law Clerk diploma, or any other combination of training or equivalent experience

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other important information:

  • You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Ave S.W.
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs
