Project Controls Specialist

You will use your expertise to:

  • Adopt a collaborative approach to develop the project’s breakdown structures for cost and schedule for integrity of work
  • Act as the subject matter expert for PC information (cost, schedule, change management) for overall project(s) as well as scopes assigned to contractors
  • Develop integrated project schedules ensuring Suncor’s Asset Development and Execution Model (ADEM) requirements for each stage of the project are met, and monitor Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) schedules
  • Work with the project estimator as required to develop project estimates and lead the conversion of the estimate into a control budget
  • Develop and maintain a total project cost report; create and maintain monthly cost flow that reflects the total project spend plan and project schedule
  • Manage and maintain change management processes on assigned projects
  • Lead and influence the project team and contractors to ensure a robust Progress and Performance (P&P) model is developed and maintained
  • Prepare quality and accurate project reports, including any variances in control plan for cost and schedule
  • Support the project close out process for cost and schedule with input from Supply Chain Management (SCM) and the project team throughout the project’s life cycle
  • Work with limited supervision and provides guidance to junior staff to implement and evaluate assigned work

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • 10 years of related work experience in project controls, cost, and scheduling
  • Experience with scheduling and cost management throughout a project’s lifecycle
  • Experience in Primavera (P6) and cost management systems like EcoSys
  • A Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • A High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • A proven understanding of project management and project controls principles
  • Phenomenal computer literacy and you are proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Access) and PowerBI
  • The ability to comprehend engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning deliverables for project execution 
  • The ability to lead multiple and changing priorities under tight deadlines
  • A strong sense of ownership, with demonstrated interpersonal and problem solving skills
  • Exceptional communication skills to interact with all functions and levels of leadership
  • Alignment with our values of: safety above all else, respect, raise the bar, commitments matter and do the right thing

Preference for:

  • AACEI (Association for the Advancement of Cost Engineering) Certified Cost Professional or Planning and Scheduling Professional
  • In-depth knowledge in Earned Value Management (EVM)
  • A positive work ethic and you are a strong communicator with an aptitude to build strong positive relationships and effectively drive messaging to diverse groups
  • Experience in both EPC and Owner companies

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other meaningful information:

  • You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Ave SW.
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday
  • Frequent travel will be required to work sites and contractors’ office locations in Canada
