Senior Advisor, Insurance

Job Overview

Reporting to the director of insurance, you will be provide expertise in the areas of risk assessment, risk based decision-making, risk transfer strategies as well as the design and placement of insurance programs, insurance expertise and support services to the organization.

Key Accountabilities

  • Issue clear and accurate instruction to external insurance brokers, negotiating with global insurance markets, delivering our operational excellence message and risk mitigation strategy
  • Assessment of the company’s major insurable risks versus coverage and capacity available in the insurance markets
  • Develop and implement risk transfer and risk tolerance strategies that incorporate the changing risk profile of Suncor’s assets and ensuring that the strategies developed are in alignment with financial risk tolerance standards
  • Negotiating insurance coverage in the global insurance market
  • Provision of insurance services and expertise to business units, including representation on joint venture (JV) insurance committees, including serving as chair for operated JV’s, and consultation on insurance programs for major projects
  • Direct insurance claim negotiations and settlements
  • Acting as a conduit for insurers’ information requirements and activities

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education

  • Ten or more years of experience in a risk management role with progressive responsibilities in risk transfer strategy development,  implementation and execution
  • Experience with risks specific to energy markets, especially upgrading / refining and in situ, but also offshore programs, is strongly preferred
  • Bachelors of Commerce or Engineering degree
  • Additional designations in Finance, Insurance or Engineering, specifically Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) and/or Canadian Risk Managment (CRM)

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Deep understanding of international regulatory regimes and familiarity with captive insurance programs.
  • Uphold strong, positive business relationships with brokers, underwriters, adjusters and business unit representatives
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, particularly in the areas of influencing senior management, driving strategic direction and change management with a proven ability to prepare, engage and deliver materials
  • Strong knowledge of insurance programs and policy wordings and expert skills in the design, marketing and placement process for all areas of insurance coverage as well as in-depth expertise of the risk profile inherent in oil and gas exploration and production
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills and able to develop relationships, gain credibility and collaborate effectively with business stakeholders
  • Problem-solver, critical thinking and negotiating skills
  • Ability to handle multiple claims with several business units utilizing an expert understanding of the implications of insurance policy wording

Working Conditions

  • This position is based in Calgary, Alberta at the Suncor Energy Centre
  • Some travel to facility sites (mainly northern Alberta) and internationally to visit insurance markets, will be required
