Senior Advisor, Stakeholder and Aboriginal Relations

Job Overview

Are you a seasoned stakeholder relations practitioner with multiple years of direct consultation experience who has worked with communities to advance complex projects and wants to take community engagement to a new level?  Reporting to the manager, stakeholder and Aboriginal relations, you will implement and continuously improve our stakeholder relations framework (policy, processes and tools), support internal governance, as well as the implement and steward of our social goal.

Key Accountabilities

  • Deep subject matter expert on effective and meaningful community and Aboriginal engagement that will manage the implementation, training and continuous improvement of our stakeholder relations framework.
  • Coach and prepare practitioners, employees and leaders in community outreach and engagement
  • Collaborate with internal teams (e.g. community investment) to support implementation of engagement objectives through planning and assessment
  • Support the manager to implement Suncor’s social goal of strengthening our relationship with Aboriginal peoples in Canada across the organization, and provide stewardship of the goal
  • Coordinate development of policy positons regarding engagement and Aboriginal relations
  • Coordinate disclosure reporting for the function
  • Coordinate company-wide community/stakeholder research and communicate and pursue improvement from the findings
  • Support the leadership team in coordinating Aboriginal Relations governance structure (vice president forum, mid-level network and multi-discipline teams)
  • Act as a member of the response team in emergency or critical situations

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education:

  • Eight or more years of relevant cumulative experience in public participation, community or stakeholder engagement, consultation, social-economic impact assessments and social risk management
  • Experience leading community and Aboriginal consultation in a regulatory environment, preferably within the oil and gas industry
  • Experience working in a large, complex organization
  • Experience designing research and supporting management systems an asset
  • Aspiration to advance into a leadership role
  • Post-secondary degree in a social science, international relations, business or other relevant field (stakeholder, community relations or regulatory)
  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • Professional association member and/or professional accreditation (International Association for Public Participation or International Right of Way Association) is an asset

Skills And Knowledge:

  • Strong ability to develop and foster positive relationships and  strategic partnerships among diverse groups with competing interests
  • Ability to translate both quantitative and qualitative elements of social impacts, risks and mitigations
  • Experience designing research and supporting management systems an asset
  • Experience working in a large complex environment

  • Aspiration to advance to a leadership role
