Specialist, Data Modeler

Using your continuous improvement experience and understanding of how data can be a critical business asset, you will work with partners across Suncor to ensure our data management and governance standards/policies are adopted as we support Suncor’s transformation.

In this senior level role, you will be responsible for providing hands-on architectural oversight of data flows, with an emphasis on defining and maintaining the enterprise logical data model and driving data standardization. Specifically, you will be accountable to develop conceptual, logical, and physical data models and data flows, supporting digital initiatives across our organization in partnership with business analysts and solution architects.

You will use your expertise to:

  • Analyze data and information requirements
  • Manage data model versioning and integration and prepare data models for deployment
  • Develop and map physical models and align the tables into the Suncor canonical data model to align and extend that model
  • Identify the architecture, infrastructure, and interfaces to data sources, tools supporting automated data loads, security concerns, analytic models, and data visualization
  • Complete hands-on modeling, design, and work with the data engineers on configuration, installation, performance tuning, and sandbox POC
  • Work proactively and independently to address project requirements and articulate issues/challenges to reduce project delivery risks
  • Capture relational and dimensional data modeling requirements, data definitions, and business rules
  • Develop and maintain data modeling standardsWork as a subject matter expert on high priority initiatives
  • Act as a domain expert for the Design and Build stage of delivery and works with Data Engineer/Wranglers to ensure the robustness of underlying foundation
  • Ensure adherence to standards across data product initiatives

We’d like to review your application if you have…

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Five years of data modelling experience including strong knowledge of data governance/management principles, methodologies and tools
  • Experience working with Power Designer, Erwin or a similar data modelling tool
  • Experience in facilitating, sharing and adoption of data governance best practices through governance councils/committees, with data stewards and various business stakeholders
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Management Systems or a related discipline or equivalent work experience
  • Alignment with our  values: : safety above all else, stronger together, operational discipline, curiosity and lifelong learning, and act with integrity

Preference for:

  • Relational and dimensional data modelling experience
  • Knowledge of Oracle SQL/noSQL
  • Experience with cloud data management e.g. Microsoft Azure
  • Experience with physical data modelling

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other important information:

  • You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Ave S.W.
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday
  • Relocation support will be provided
