Senior Engineer, In Situ Technology

Job Overview

Reporting to the Director, In Situ Strategic Technology, you will provide technology development expertise to support the progression of in situ technologies in the lab, pilot and commercial demonstration phases.

Key Accountabilities

  • Support progression of technologies from conception to commercial readiness, including both the technical and business components of the technologies
  • Provide subsurface engineering expertise to support in situ program leads, including strategic and tactical input
  • Influence the framing of the path to deployment for various technologies
  • Peer review for subsurface technology projects
  • Continuously analyze technical merit and economics of technology as new information becomes available and prepare ongoing reports to leaders
  • Participate in planning and design development of the subsurface components of lab and field demonstration tests, including viewing and analyzing operating conditions and performance
  • Participate in technology risk assessments, identifying potential barriers to implementation and plan accordingly
  • Lead subsurface technical aspects with external technology partners such as other oil sands operators or technology vendors, and contractors
  • Mentor and advise junior personnel
  • Lead by influence across the organization to gain the support of other business areas needed to successfully progress technologies to field readiness

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education:

  • 10 years or more of engineering experience in conventional oil and gas as well as EOR/SAGD
  • Operational experience in an in situ bitumen oil sands asset
  • Experience with external technology vendors and joint venture partners
  • Experience in subsurface electrical and electromagnetic/radio frequency, reaction models for chemical reactions and alternative recovery concepts is an asset
  • Experience in conventional and non-conventional reservoir engineering with a deep understanding of the fundamentals
  • Undergraduate or advanced degree in engineering, preferably chemical, electrical or petroleum; registered or eligible to be registered as a professional engineer in Alberta

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Skilled in experimental design, with the ability to help develop and guide the execution of lab and field work to ensure the right information is captured
  • Strong analytical skills of lab and field technology pilots
  • Skilled in reservoir simulation including how to couple simulation with field implementation and how to use simulation results to inform business decisions
  • Deep understanding of solvent recovery processes
  • Standout colleague with highly developed interpersonal and communications skills to effectively collaborate with technical and managerial staff across diverse groups
  • A self-starter able to take broad direction, description of desired outcomes, and project goals and objectives, and turn them into a series of actionable tasks to drive projects forward at a fast pace

 Working Conditions

  • Occasional travel to technology vendors, research organizations and pilot/demo sites will be required up to 5% of the time
