Senior Process Engineer, Strategic Technologies

Job Overview

Reporting to the manager, in situ technology development, you will provide overall surface process design and leadership for strategic technology projects, with a primary focus on the design and optimization of surface facility equipment, layout and subsurface system integration of pilots, demonstration facilities as well as commercial implementation.  You will work closely with the development, execution, operations and subsurface technology leads, and be responsible for leading technical work with vendors and engineering firms.

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead the technical aspects of the surface equipment design and layout related to pilot and demo facilities for solvent and gas-based recovery processes
  • Provide support on process technology for earlier stage technologies (lab-scale)
  • Lead the optimization of equipment and layout for commercial implementation
  • Participate in planning, design, development, construction of pilot and demonstration facilities, reviewing and analyzing operating conditions and performance
  • Continuously analyzes technical merit and economics of technology as new information becomes available and prepare ongoing reports to leaders
  • Accountable for quality, cost and schedule of the technology development projects in conjunction with the development lead
  • Lead by influencing across the organization to gain the support of the other business units needed to successfully implement technology pilots and demonstrations
  • Participate in risk and hazard assessments to identify potential barriers to implementation and plans accordingly
  • Lead the technical aspects with external technology partners and contractors
  • Support project managers and operations personnel to coordinate specified areas of hazard assessments, pre-commissioning activities, mechanical completion, hand-over, performance testing, commissioning and start-up

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education

  • A minimum of 7 to 10 years’ work experience in progressively more senior positions leading process engineering, including process simulation, combustion, gas processing, materials selection, system integration and optimization work
  • Experience with subsurface hydrocarbon recovery processes (reservoir engineering, production engineering and/or reservoir simulation) would be an asset
  • Development mindset and an understanding of how to advance technology development projects
  • Undergraduate or advanced degree in civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical engineering or equivalent
  • Registered or immediately eligible for registration as a professional engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)

Skills and Knowledge

  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills to effectively collaborate with technical and managerial staff across an array of disciplines
  • Knowledge and operations understanding of in situ surface and gas processing facilities
  • Able to take broad direction, description of desired outcomes, and project goals and objectives, and turn them into a series of actionable tasks to drive projects forward at a fast pace
  • You expect accountability of yourself and others and exhibit dependability in delivering on assigned tasks with quality and timeliness

Working Conditions

  • This position is based in Calgary working a Monday – Friday schedule
