Senior Specialist, Contract Management

Supply Chain Management (SCM) plays an important role in our journey to be a low-cost producer, and as a strategic business partner; we understand material and service needs and provide the choices that align with our business priorities. Our SCM group is made up of approximately 900 professional staff who collaborate with all business units to acquire materials and services at the lowest price, and manage the process from demand identification through to procurement strategy development, market evaluation, commercial negotiations, inventory management, contract performance management, and cash settlement.


Job Overview

Reporting to the manager, IT hardware, networks, services, and EHS Corporate Services, you will be responsible for developing commodity strategies, negotiating contracts, managing supplier performance, and identifying commercial optimization opportunities.  This role will be collaborating closely with the business unit stakeholders and external contractors in order to drive value for the business within the professional services, information and project management, and downstream category.

Key Accountabilities

  • Support and manage lifecycle contract activities while continuously improving, evaluating and analyzing commercial models for optimal business solutions
  • Craft, negotiate, and draft commercial agreements for provision of materials and services that are consistent with our articulated supply strategies, including leading go to market activities and negotiations of relevant contracts within the sub-category
  • Consolidate sub-category demand for materials and services at the site and enterprise levels
  • Build and implement supply strategies for the sub-category, using deep knowledge of the materials and services required
  • Coordinate the effective roll-out of negotiated terms and conditions to respective peers and business units
  • Ensure that contract compliance and overall spend management is consistent with the sub-category strategy and contracts
  • Oversee the process for contractor performance management activities and continue to build positive contractor relationships

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education:

  • At least six years of experience in developing and implementing commercial strategies to achieve business goals and objectives, including negotiation and formation of high value contract
  • Preference given to experience in applying and implementing successful commercial strategies for both corporate and field based information services and / or environmental, health and safety stakeholder teams
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in business, computer science, management information systems, economics, law or engineering

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Deep understanding of category management practices with the ability to deliver solutions to diverse groups, including in-depth knowledge of corporate governance, policies and procedures and contract/procurement law
  • Excellent internal and external networking and negotiating skills, as demonstrated through effective collaboration with key partners and driving true value
  • Strong commercial and financial acumen, attention to detail, and proven strategic problem solving skills
  • Results-oriented and able to drive both execution and accountability from both internal stakeholders and contractors
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to take complex issues and distill them down into easy to understand concepts
  • Demonstrated skills in business partner relationship management and continuous improvement applications

Working Conditions

  • This position is based in Calgary, Alberta at the Suncor Energy Centre, generally on a Monday to Friday work schedule
  • Travel may be required to Suncor sites within Canada and the U.S.
