Optimization Specialist, Commercial LP

Job Overview

Reporting to the director, optimization, you will be responsible to be a central touchpoint between trading, optimization, and mid-long term linear programming (LP) specialists. You will run short-term scenarios and re-optimized plans based on changing market conditions, using an LP optimization tool, and coordinate the output to all relevant partners.

Key Accountabilities

  • Re-optimize the Monthly Operating Plan by introducing a frequently updated business environment to LP runs that will become the basis for short-term optimization activities
  • Work closely with trading and supply/optimization to run LP sensitivities and “what-if” scenarios based on market changes and trading views
  • Plays a coordinating role of the Value Chain Management Team (VCMT) in organizing and preparing scenarios for weekly VCMT meetings
  • Identify trigger points (volumetrically or financially) that would change decisions and force re-assessment of the operating plan
  • Look for creative and “out of the box” solutions to remove / minimize financial impacts of current constraints so that we can improve profit for refining and logistics
  • Provide key inputs to the integrated planning process
  • Development of specialized and rare skills to run and analyze Commercial LP results which typically develops over a span of several years
  • Work with the specialist in the other orbits for inter-regional LP models so that cross orbit synergies are captured
  • Supporting agile and nimble decision-making to take advantage of market opportunities

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education:

  • Six or more years of total industry experience, including at least three years of refinery experience
  • LP and/or process modelling in a commercial context
  • Crude supply and/or planning and scheduling experience would be an asset
  • Chemical / Mechanical Engineering degree or another relevant technical degree

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Advanced knowledge of refining operations and Supply activities and principles
  • Advanced knowledge of LP, financial drivers and information systems
  • Knowledge of oil market fundamentals and drivers
  • Working knowledge of data warehouse programs and interfaces with LP models
  • Understanding of crude and refined product economics
  • Understanding of Marketing and Refinery Sales as to their flexibility and limitations
  • Demonstrated innovative thinking and commercially-minded

Working Conditions

  • Depending on the locale of the successful candidate,  you will work out of our Calgary, Alberta, or Houston, Texas office
  • The scope of the job and the magnitude of influence will occasionally build high stress situations and long work hours
  • Most work will be conducted within an office environment, periodic traveling to other locations is expected
