Senior Analyst , Commodity Market Risk and Compliance

Job Overview

Reporting to the Team Lead of Commodity Market Risk & Compliance, you will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day commodity market pricing activities for the Supply and Trading function.  You will be situated on the trade floor, and experience the fast paced, dynamic environment where multi-million dollar energy contracts are executed.

Key Accountabilities

  • Build advanced commodity pricing models to facilitate the end of day (EOD) process through the use of SQL/VBA programming
  • Know the EOD processes (morning and afternoon) for all traded commodities (crude, nat. gas, power) and provide coverage with focus on  streamlining process improvement
  • Troubleshoot problems with prices or deals in the trading system; coordinating with IT support to resolve issues
  • Validate forward price curves and pricing analysis, ensuring data integrity and accuracy as well as setting up new curves
  • Work closely with Middle Office colleagues to ensure accurate commodity pricing for daily profit/loss reporting
  • Gain an in-depth understanding of commodity prices, specifically crude oil
  • Assist in the implementation of processes and reporting requirements to meet Dodd-Frank  and EMIR derivative regulations
  • Understand Trade Surveillance requirements and reporting (including Position Limits, Wash Trading, Spoof trading, Market Manipulation etc.)
  • Perform ad hoc analysis and projects as required
  • Complete relevant SOX related controls and procedures

Required Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Risk Management experience in the areas of crude oil, natural gas or power considered  an asset
  • Bachelor Degree in Commerce, Economics, Finance, Engineering, Mathematics or equivalent education

Skills and Knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of SQL and VBA
  • Intermediate microsoft excel skills (complex formulae, macros)
  • High level of intellectual curiosity for understanding markets, finance, and commerce
  • Proficient with analyzing complex sets of data, and problem solve independently
  • Capacity to multitask, working under daily deadlines and employing a continuous improvement mindset
  • Detail oriented with the ability to demonstrate a high degree of accuracy, performing tasks in a noisy environment
  • Effective interpersonal skills as well as verbal and written communication skills

Working Conditions

  • This position is based in Calgary, Alberta at the Suncor Energy Centre
  • This position requires flexibility in work hours
  • The gas and power risk group follows a US based holiday calendar
