Senior Analyst, Commodity Market Risk and Compliance

Job Overview

Reporting to the team lead, process and compliance, you will work within a highly motivated and professional team responsible for overseeing the day-to-day commodity market risk and compliance related activities for the supply and trading function, being situated on the trade floor, and will experience the fast paced, exciting environment where multi-million dollar energy contracts are bought and sold on the markets each day.

Key Accountabilities

  • Use SQL/VBA programming to build advanced commodity pricing models to facilitate the end of day (EOD) process
  • Gain an in-depth understanding of all existing Suncor traded commodities and develop pricing models to value complex or illiquid commodity grades
  • Initial focus on process improvement of existing commodity market risk and compliance procedures
  • Understand Trade Surveillance requirements and reporting (including position limits, wash trading, spoof trading, market manipulation etc.)
  • Implement processes and reporting requirements to meet domestic and international derivative regulations (Dodd-Frank, EMIR etc.)
  • Work closely with other Middle Office staff to ensure accurate commodity pricing for daily profit/loss reporting
  • Validation and construction of forward price curves and pricing analysis, ensuring data integrity and accuracy for SOX compliance
  • Gatekeeper for systems and applications access including ICE, NGX etc.
  • Perform ad hoc analysis and projects as required

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education:

  • Risk management experience in the areas of crude oil, natural gas or power is an asset
  • Bachelor degree in commerce, economics, finance, engineering, mathematics, or an equivalent education
  • Preference will be given to individuals actively pursuing their chartered financial analyst (CFA) designation

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (complex formulae, macros)
  • Strong knowledge of SQL and VBA
  • Thorough understanding of the North American energy markets is highly preferred 
  • Demonstrate a high level of intellectual curiosity for understanding commodity compliance, finance, and commerce
  • Proficient with analyzing complex sets of data, and possesses the ability to problem solve independently
  • Capacity to multi-task, working under daily deadlines and employing a continuous improvement mindset
  • Detail oriented with the ability to demonstrate a high degree of accuracy, performing tasks in an open and dynamic environment
  • Effective interpersonal skills as well as verbal and written communication skills

Working Conditions

  • This position is based in Calgary, Alberta at the Suncor Energy Centre
  • This position requires flexibility in work hours
  • The group follows a US-based holiday calendar
