Strategic Technology Student

You will support the team in the development of new process technologies to reduce the overall production footprint from an operating cost, capital intensity, and environmental impact perspective. 

You will use your expertise to:

  • Support a team tasked to advance bitumen extraction technologies from oil sands
  • Maintain and advance computer based technical models to support the evaluation and scale up of technologies and deployment flow sheets
  • Collaborate with external research groups conducting experimental work on supporting technology initiatives to compile and analyze data
  • Support the analysis and synthesis of data from a wide range of supporting experimental (bench top, pilot, field, etc.) and engineering assessments
  • Support the assessment of various technology initiatives within the broader program Decarbonization program and support development along appropriate deployment paths
  • Review and support the design, construction, operation and data analysis for prototype and pilot scale test units

We’d like to review your application if you have…

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Current enrollment in a formal co-op or internship program in 3rd, 4th year or Master’s Chemical Engineering with a minor in Computer Science at an accredited post-secondary institution, and returning to full-time studies after the work term
  • Attach your transcripts with your application and clearly indicate the length of work term for which you are available
  • Excellent data analytics skills 
  • Alignment with our values of: safety above all else, respect, raise the bar, commitments matter and do the right thing

Preference for:

  • Deep understanding of chemical engineering fundamentals
  • Strong computer skills with intermediate to advanced proficiency in MS Office, particularly  Excel
  • Ability to critically analyze the operating data and observations from pilot test units
  • Strong process simulation skills using materials handling software, MATLAB and/or Aspen HYSIS
  • Collaboration skills that enable you to build strong, positive relationships with diverse groups
  • You to have extraordinary research experience
  • The ability to anticipate potential problems and check for out-of-the-ordinary conditions, as well as having a strong sense of accountability

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other meaningful information:

  • You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Ave S.W.
  • This is an 12 month work term, from May 2019 – April 2020
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday
  • Occasional travel to field operations and key technology vendor facilities as required
