Automation Specialist

As we’ve recently announced, we are moving our Toronto-area Downstream offices (which are focused primarily on refining and marketing) to Calgary, to ensure we remain competitive for the long-term and to better integrate our Downstream business with the rest of Suncor. This is an exciting opportunity for new team members to fill roles made available during this process and be part of our success in the future.

If you are a strong problem solver and interested in becoming our next TopTech expert, then we have the role for you! You will be a key member of the Suncor team with a strong focus on providing support while ensuring a high degree of reliability of the TopTech mission critical system.

You will use your expertise to:

  • Show dedication to our Journey to Zero safety culture and programs
  • Act as the primary point of contact for support and while conducting systematic review of issues to determine possible causes and identify steps to resolve  
  • Monitor performance and manage the reliability of the national Terminal Management System (TMS) network across the country
  • Build strong positive relationships with vendors and while utilizing your continuous improvement mindset to provide input into research and development (R&D) of the product
  • Develop budgets and life cycle planning for hardware and software within the install base
  • Identify and assess opportunities for automation
  • Project resource for Terminal operations projects and commissioning
  • Review and implement legislative and company policies and standards including SOX related processes

We’d like to review your application if you have…

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Seven years of Instrumentation Automation experience
  • A superb knowledge of process control technologies
  • Intimate knowledge of terminal operations functions and server-side scripting
  • A strong programming background with Pre-Set Controller experience
  • A post-secondary education in Computer Studies, Engineering Technician, or equivalent
  • Strong communication skills which allow you to collaborate effectively to achieve the best results and deliver the most value
  • The ability to meet multiple concurrent project deadlines and deal quickly and decisively with issues as they arise
  • A continuous improvement mindset and you are able to seek greater knowledge and understanding of the systems, process and hazards in the workplace
  • A valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record

Preference for:

  • Programmable Logic Control (PLC) experience as well as an understanding of Linux, QNX, and SCADA systems, Rockwell PlantPAX and Citect
  • Strong understanding of Administrative/SAP processes, SRS and Systemworks
  • Knowledge of all legislative requirements in keeping with the petroleum logistics industry: TDG, TLM, CPPI, WHIMIS, Measurement Canada 
  • Knowledge and experience with application development tools such as Visual Studio, ASP, HTM, XML, JAVA, and web methodologies and techniques
  • Strong knowledge of Network components Switches, Firewalls. VLAN, Virtual Machines
  • Experience with communication protocols like TCP/IP, Ether Net/IP, OPC, and Modbus

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other important information:

  • You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Ave S.W.
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs  
  • Able to work with minimal supervision as well as providing on-call support during off hours
  • Frequent travel to support facilities geographically dispersed from coast to coast (approximately 7 business days per month)
  • Relocation support will be provided
