Senior Occupational Hygienist - Central EHS

In this fast paced and dynamic role, you will support the enterprise activities by anticipating and identifying potential health hazards and driving consistency in the management of health hazards. As an integral member of the Central Occupational Hygiene and Product Safety team, you will help drive consistency in health hazard management across the Enterprise and provide overall occupational hygiene advice to diverse groups. 

You will use your expertise to:

  • Promote occupational hygiene initiatives through active engagement with the site occupational hygienists and participation with the various Suncor sites to ensure compliance of legislative requirements as well as industry and company standards (e.g. respiratory protection, hearing protection, ventilation, etc.)
  • Anticipate and recognise occupational hygiene stressors and implements effective control methodologies, strategies, and governance mechanisms
  • Independently identify continuous improvement opportunities to effectively control exposures to occupational and environmental health hazards
  • Support with the administration of various occupational hygiene related tools, software, and data management systems to ensure data integrity. record keeping and preservation (e.g. Cority, Livelink, Collaboration sites, MS Teams, etc.)
  • Conduct occupational health hazard assessments (qualitative/quantitative assessments, ergonomics assessments, audits, etc.)  and participate in project risk reviews (e.g. PHAs, JHAs, HAZOPs and engineering design) as required
  • Participate in incident investigations, root cause analyses and development of corrective actions related to potential worker exposure
  • Support Suncor site occupational hygienists/EHS advisors on the effective implementation of Suncor’s occupational hygiene best practices
  • Review and approve safety data sheets for vendor products used as required
  • Anticipate regulatory changes and industry trends potentially affecting our operations, and proactively lead the change management process
  • Support provision of disability claim data summaries for WCB requests  
  • Support Suncor worksites in the event of emergency/incident/during turnaround management

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Ten years of experience in the Energy or manufacturing sector
  • A Bachelor’s degree in the area of Occupational Hygiene, Science, Environmental Science, Engineering, or Occupational Safety and Health
  • Registration of professional designation: Registered Occupational Hygienist(ROH) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
  • Outstanding collaboration skills that enable you to build strong, positive relationships with diverse groups
  • Strong technical writing and presentation skills to report on risks posed by identified health hazard, and on monitored results to management
  • A continuous improvement mindset and are able to seek greater knowledge and understanding of the systems, process and hazards in the workplace

Preference for:

  • Extensive experience identifying, assessing and managing occupational health hazard risks on large scale construction and/or oil and gas sites
  • Extensive experience performing occupational hygiene field audits/assessments on contractors, including the provision of relevant feedback and recommendations
  • Knowledge of federal and provincial legislation relating to occupational health and safety
  • A real passion for providing solutions to complex issues utilizing proficient analytical, problem solving skills and independent discernment

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other important information:

  • You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Ave S.W.
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs
  • Occasional travel to various Suncor worksites
