Our Commerce City refinery produces 100,000 barrels-per-day and is the only petroleum refinery in the area and one of the largest in the Rocky Mountain region. In this role, reporting to the manager of turnaround and construction, you are recognized as the authority for turnaround and construction execution within the Refinery. You will be responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient and fiscally responsible execution of turnarounds, small capital projects and major maintenance outages.

You will use your expertise to:

  • Ensure that key outputs have constructability reviews, safe work plans, as well as cost and schedule management with regular stewardship updates
  • Ensure  plans and schedules have been optimized by incorporating trade, corporate and industry best practices
  • Act as a subject matter expert for planning and scheduling construction projects and major maintenance activities, including providing input into the budgeting process
  • Manage site Maintenance contractor(s) to their respective contract and annual performance expectations. The close adherence to Suncor safety policies and procedures along with the effective use of proactive safety programs, Field Level Risk Assessment (FLRA) and behavioral based programs are a key component of achieving this. 
  • Audit for compliance, identification of improvement opportunities and leadership to drive improvements is a key output
  • Review, recommend and implement consistent application of turnaround processes, standards and procedures across all projects, including collection and processing of lessons learned and standard methodologies
  • Collaborate with Turnaround and Construction Manager as well as Maintenance Manager to develop planning strategies
  • Build strong positive relations with diverse groups and project teams to coordinate project work
  • Support the construction execution organization as an active field coordinator and in periods of high demand, transition into a leadership role

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Eight years of tradesperson experience and prior experience in maintenance/turnaround planning
  • A High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • Knowledge of managing a unionized environment and an understanding of the site Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA)
  • Comfort in interacting with levels ranging from craft and contractor management up to senior management
  • Alignment with our values of: safety above all else, respect, raise the bar, commitments matter and do the right thing

Preference for:

  • A University degree or a technical college diploma
  • Deep understanding of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word), SAP and Primavera
  • High motivation and you possess good communication (written and verbal) skills to interact with your client groups in a unionized environment and all levels of leadership
  • A highly motivated self-starter with excellent organizational, planning, conflict identification and resolution skills to achieve positive outcomes
  • The ability to supervise direct reports, manage performance and oversee functional support resources to ensure accountabilities are met
  • The drive to constantly ask what could go wrong and check for out-of-the-ordinary conditions and learn to anticipate potential problems

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other meaningful information:

  • You will work out of our Commerce City refinery, located at 5455 Brighton Blvd
  • This role requires approximately 70/30 split between office and field environment. Regular plant visits are required to conduct inspections, safety tours and general contact and communications with trades-people and leadership
  • Flexibility is needed to work extended hours during peak turnarounds and peak project periods
  • You will be required to climb stairs and work from heights with the capability to perform in a variety of different environments both indoor and outdoor as well as confined spaces
  • You thrive in a dynamic environment and will experience short periods of high stress levels due to the wide variety of issues that may require attention at a time
  • This position takes on a significant leadership role during Turnarounds managing planning, scheduling and execution work
