Coordinator, Incident Investigation

Job Overview

Do you want to be the subject matter expert for all aspects of the incident reporting, investigation and follow up process, including conformance to applicable standards, procedures, performance metrics, enterprise tools and investigation methods? Reporting to the manager, process safety and operations excellence at our Commerce City refinery, you will manage the execution of incident investigation program, develop a team that can deliver high quality investigations and provide corrective actions, and work closely with leadership team to present investigation findings and incident stats.

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead and facilitate incident investigations as assigned, ensuring compliance with internal and external requirements
  • Interpret regulations, standards, procedures and investigation methods and advise the organization on proper practices and protocols
  • Assist incident owners in developing and communicating lessons learned
  • Train and mentor Suncor staff and contractors as needed to achieve high quality incident investigations
  • Develop and perform quality audits on all aspects of the incident management program
  • Gather information as needed for site and corporate metrics
  • Perform trends and root cause analysis of investigations to focus on continuous improvement strategies
  • Serve as a member of the process safety management employees committee
  • Provide a visible field presence and engages frontline workers to review incident investigations and discuss lessons learned.
  • Act as the primary lead investigator for level 2 investigations up to available capacity

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education:

  • 5 to 10 years of related industrial experience; refinery experience is preferred
  • Minimum two years of experience conducting incident investigations, root cause analysis and or audits and assessments
  • Experience with engineering, safety, maintenance, reliability, operations or equivalent disciplines and basic work practices is an asset
  • Post-secondary degree in any discipline is preferred
  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) is required

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Proficiency with TapRoot and Enablon is an asset
  • Developing and delivering training materials, analyzing data and preparing reports
  • Knowledge of refinery operations, including safety procedures, processes and refining equipment
  • You are detailed oriented and highly organized
  • Knowledge of enterprise root cause analysis methodologies and principles
  • You are a highly motivated self-starter who possesses strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • You are a strong problem solver with proven decision-making and analytical skills and are able to contribute effectively in a team environment to achieve the best results and deliver the most value to the organization
  • You constantly interact with various individuals across a multitude of business units and effectively collaborate with them to build positive relationships

Working Conditions

  • In this position, you may be asked to perform other duties related to process safety management
  • This is a highly demanding position, requiring you to be available to manage extended periods of increased workload, meet ambitious deadlines, handle changing priorities and the high need for safety and environmental compliance
  • You will be required to enter the refinery for investigation activities, interviews, knowledge sharing, etc.
  • You will be on call for any major refinery incident
