In this role, you will have the opportunity to work with a dynamic team of highly dedicated and committed professionals in support of our operations. You will be responsible for supporting the development, implementation, and sustainment of Health and Safety (H&S) and emergency management solutions.

You will use your expertise to:

  • Collaborate with all levels of leadership to support the design of facility H&S programs, procedures, safe work practices, orientations, campaigns, etc.
  • Interpret and apply federal and local health and safety regulations that govern the activities, products and services to assist leaders in reflecting due diligence in decision-making
  • Conduct incident investigations and provide incident owners with a full debrief in findings with your continuous improvement mindset to provide solutions to prevent potential issues in the future
  • Perform incident root cause analysis and mentor owners in cause and corrective action
  • Support capital projects and other engineering projects while you ensure compliance with our standards and federal and local regulatory requirements
  • Perform technical writing functions that include editing processes, procedures, plans and reports
  • Oversee and perform audits and assessments and work with leaders in these processes (e.g. SIF control verifications, environmental controls, inspections, safety observations etc.)
  • Build strong positive relationships to influence and act as a lead in the safety aspect of contractor management, typically through site-based kick-off meetings and field validations of contractor hazard assessments and/or verification plans to ensure controls are in place
  • Train and provide mentorship to employees and contractors on specific H&S practices and procedures

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • One year of health and safety experience within the oil and gas industry
  • A post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S), Environment or Industrial Hygiene, or equivalent education
  • Experience conducting hazard assessments, incident investigations, analyses, audits and self-assessments
  • Intermediate to advanced level proficiency with Microsoft Office Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • A valid driver’s  with a driving record acceptable to Suncor
  • A valid passport, as international travel may be required
  • Alignment with our values of: safety above all else, respect, raise the bar, commitments matter and do the right thing

Preference for:

  • A Valid Certified Safety Professional (CSP) designation
  • Advanced knowledge in identifying hazards and controls specific to processes and activities in work areas and/or environmental aspects and a continuous improvement mindset
  • A deep understanding of interpreting and applying regulatory requirements
  • A positive attitude, and you are a committed self-starter with knowledge of how to tackle complex problems using your ability to influence others and use advanced technical concepts to make decisions
  • Strong communication (both written and verbal) and interpersonal skills which allow you to collaborate effectively to achieve the best results and deliver the most value

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other meaningful information:

  • You will work out of our Commerce City refinery, located at 5455 Brighton Blvd.
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs, including being on-call as appropriate and potentially working night shifts as necessary during large scale outages, turnarounds, and/or emergencies
  • You will be required to use ladders and work on elevated work sites such as scaffolds and towers with the ability to perform in a variety of different environments both indoor and outdoor as well as within confined spaces
  • You thrive in a dynamic work environment with multiple priorities, challenging demands, and deadlines
