Industrial Hygienist

In this position, you will be responsible for anticipating and identifying potential health hazards, conducting risk assessments and evaluations, and developing exposure controls and monitoring; providing overall industrial hygiene advice to the Refinery and other portions of the US business.

You will use your expertise to:

  • Provide technical advice, expertise and direction to clients in order to ensure compliance with legislative requirements along with industry and company standard methodologies
  • Conduct workplace assessments to identify, quantify and control risk to people, property and equipment as well as identify and mitigate chemical, physical, biological and ergonomic issues
  • Support outage and / or turnaround hygiene requests
  • Assist in the development and implementation of Health and Safety (H&S) programs and processes that support the business
  • Serve as the Radiation Safety Officer
  • Work with regulatory authorities on industrial hygiene matters, and with external consultants to ensure their safety when on site
  • Ensure accurate recordkeeping (filing, personal letters) and perform data entry for all assessments conducted
  • Work with the Occupational Health Nurse to ensure appropriate medical surveillance programs are in place with a continuous improvement attitude
  • Build strong positive relationships while representing Suncor at various committees and associations
  • Review and approve Safety Data Sheets for new products

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Five years of experience in a petroleum, petrochemical or other industrial setting
  • A Bachelor degree in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science or Occupational Safety and Health
  • Strong technical writing and presentation skills to report monitored results to management
  • Alignment with our values of: safety above all else, respect, raise the bar, commitments matter and do the right thing

Preference for:

  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and / or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) with proficient in Cority software and case management experience
  • Radiation Safety Officer training and/or experience
  • A real passion for providing solutions to complex issues utilizing proficient analytical, problem solving skills and independent discernment
  • Strong working knowledge of Occupational H&S regulations and practices
  • The proven ability to understand individual H&S concerns, operational risks, and business demands when working with the organization to develop solutions to issues
  • An ability to garner trust and maintain confidentiality with employee exposure and medical related information
