Process Safety Engineer, Pressure Protection Systems

Job Overview

Reporting to the manager, process safety and operational excellence, you will be responsible for providing leadership in matters related to pressure relief and flare systems.

Key Accountabilities

  • Provide expertise for areas relating to relief valves, relieving systems and equipment for overpressure protection
  • Review all management of change (MOC) requests to determine impact on flare and other relieving systems as well as overpressure impacts to equipment
  • Input data into process safety pressure protection management (PSPPM) database to ensure changes are aligned with API 520/521 for both MOC’s and capital projects
  • Consult with engineering staff to determine correct sizing for RV’s, headers, etc.
  • Build strong positive relationships to collaborate with Suncor technical excellence networks or communities of practice
  • Develop additional pressure sensitivity valve (PSV) related expertise through mentoring other engineers
  • Participate in and offer advice during process hazard analysis (PHA) or layers of protection analysis (LOPA) discussions
  • Demonstrate a safety and continuous improvement mindset
  • Build strong positive relationships within the team, other peers and third party contractors

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education:

  • A minimum of five years of experience in process engineering with at least two years working in relief valve sizing and flare system analysis
  • Refinery experience is preferred
  • Bachelor degree in chemical engineering
  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Highly developed analytical skills, with technical working knowledge of API standards 520 and 521
  • Strong understanding of refinery processes to make sound recommendations for process safety corrective actions
  • Strong time management skills and can stay calm under pressure, manage priorities, and react promptly to meet deadlines with high-quality work
  • Effective organizational skills to prioritize and lead projects/initiatives within tight deadlines; you are highly motivated, resourceful and resilient
  • You collaborate with others in order to achieve the best results and deliver the most value
  • Self-motivated, works independently and committed to continuous improvement
