Process Safety Engineer

We have a great opportunity for you to join our Commerce City refinery which produces 100,000 barrels-per-day and is the only petroleum refinery in the area (and one of the largest in the Rocky Mountain region). In this role, reporting to the Manager of our Process Safety and Operational Excellence group, you will be responsible for providing technical and policy guidance and continually monitor the effectiveness of process safety programs from both a regulatory compliance and technical perspective.

 

You will use your expertise to:

  • Act as one of the leading in-house authorities on process safety
  • Oversee the Management of Change (MOC) and Pre-Startup Safety Review (PSSR) program
  • Maintain and coordinate the refinery’s Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) program
  • Facilitate/coordinate PHAs, Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA), and other risk management activities
  • Champion the transfer of process safety knowledge to plant personnel
  • Lead or conduct special studies/analysis of process safety related issues (facility siting, consequence analysis, etc.)
  • Participate in investigating process safety related incidents as assigned
  • Monitor the effectiveness of the Process Safety Management (PSM) program
  • Provide expertise in the electronic management systems that support process safety (i.e. SAP, KMS & Enablon)
  • Speak on PSM compliance programs with representatives of regulatory agencies
  • Assist in mentoring and developing process safety talent within other departments in the refinery

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Five years of experience in operations, engineering and/or process safety
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering; preferably in Chemical or Process Engineering
  • Three years of experience in process safety systems and process controls
  • Experience using MOC/PHA/LOPA software packages
  • Alignment with our values of: safety above all else, respect, raise the bar, commitments matter and do the right thing

Preference for:

  • A strong understanding of refinery processes, operations and equipment to make sound recommendations for process safety corrective actions
  • Proven Process Safety Management (OSHA 1910.119) knowledge
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to build positive relationships in order to achieve the best results and deliver the most value
  • Highly motivated, resourceful, resilient and committed to continuous improvement
  • Demonstrated self-motivation and initiative in identifying business drivers and resolving the root cause of problems.
  • Innovative and creative thinking and problem solving.

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other meaningful information:

  • You will work out of our Commerce City refinery, located at 5455 Brighton Blvd
  • You will be part of the engineering department and may be asked to perform other assignments within the engineering department’s functions
  • You have the ability to work under stressful complex work environment with potentially rapidly changing conditions; stress may come from ensuring we are in compliance with both government and internal company standards 
  • You thrive in a dynamic environment with multiple priorities, challenging demands and strict deadlines
