Senior Communications Advisor

In this senior-level role, you will be accountable for the development and execution of communications strategies and plans to proactively support our Suncor business objectives in Colorado and Wyoming.

You will use your expertise to:

  • Provide strategic communications advice and counsel to the Commerce City Refinery leadership team
  • Develop and implement comprehensive communications strategies and plans to support key internal and external business projects and initiatives
  • Support Suncor’s issues management process to help advance business interests as well as protect and enhance the company’s reputation in Colorado and Wyoming. This includes identification, prioritization and strategy development
  • Work collaboratively across cross-functional teams to support internal and external communications, including employee engagement, community notifications/alerts, stakeholder inquiries, crisis communications, media relations, and issues management
  • Act as a member of the refinery’s response management team to provide timely communication and stakeholder/community relations support during emergencies or critical events

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • 10 or more years of experience in Communications (corporate or agency related) or Public Relations
  • A post-secondary education in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Business or an equivalent related field
  • Superior collaboration and communications skills (written and verbal) to effectively manage and position complex industry issues
  • Critical and strategic thinking, good judgment, the ability to recognize communication needs and opportunities, as well as work with complex topics to draw conclusions and make recommendations
  • Demonstrated successes in risk, change, crisis communications and reputation management
  • Demonstrated successes in strategic employee and external communications and change management
  • The ability to manage self-directed work and possess an adaptive work style to handle multiple priorities, competing deadlines, and challenging demands
  • Experience working within a dynamic and large complex organization supporting multiple business areas or locations

Preference for:

  • Knowledge of various communication channels including social media and digital communications tools
  • Project management experience
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish) – please submit your resume in English
  • A thorough understanding of and experience working with diverse groups at all levels of the organization
  • Experience in the Oil and Gas or energy industry and knowledge of Suncor Energy’s refining, marketing and pipeline businesses and challenges
  • Experience with technical and scientific data, taking complex systems information and determining appropriate communications plans, tactics and channels

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other important information:

  • You will work out of our Commerce City Refinery Business Center, located at 5455 Brighton Blvd.
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs as well as on-call rotation
  • Occasional business travel within Colorado and Wyoming is required
  • Working in a dynamic operating environment with changing expectations
