Senior Process Engineer

Job Overview

As the senior process engineer, you will provide leadership, coaching and mentoring to promote Suncor’s engineering standards and industry standard methodologies into process design packages. Reporting to the manager, you will also provide technical direction to the process engineers to ensure that the process designs meet the intended objectives and consider safety, environmental, process safety management, reliability and operability in the designs.

Key Accountabilities

  • Provide Suncor technical leadership for process designs from the process engineering group including technical guidance and mentoring
  • Demonstrate technical knowledge in the area of process engineering and provide technical guidance and mentoring to younger process engineers
  • Represent process engineering to operations personnel in the design and implementation of process designs
  • Complete process engineering designs and process studies as required for the small capital projects group
  • Participate in and offer advice during process hazard analysis (PHA) or layers of protection analysis (LOPA) for small capital projects
  • Demonstrate a safety mindset both on and off the job
  • Develop and sustain internal and external customer relationships in order to ensure appropriate partners have reviewed process designs
  • Manage and oversee work done by our contractors
  • Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with the team, other peers and third party contractors
  • Improve internal work processes to increase efficiency and productivity
  • Provide technical mentorship for refinery operations, catalyst loadings, turnarounds, etc. as requested

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education:

  • At least 12 years of process engineering experience; refining experience is preferred
  • Five or more years of design experience is preferred
  • Preference for at least three years of operations experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Advanced knowledge of refinery operations and project economics
  • Proficient with industry standards and standard methodologies
  • Knowledge in equipment sizing and selection
  • Familiarity with process safety management
  • Computer literate in the Microsoft Office suite
  • Ability to use Aspentech’s HYSYS process simulator
  • Ability to learn new computer packages (PI Process Book, Knowledge Management System (KMS) , Siemen’s Relief Valve Program (PSPPM), SAP)
  • Ability to interact with all levels in the organization with appropriate style and communication
  • Ability to integrate and balance big-picture concerns with day to day activities
  • Ability to resolve conflicts and use a collaboration approach to maintain positive relationships and work towards solutions under difficult circumstance
