Projects Engineer (Electrical and Instrumentation)

You will be responsible to provide technical leadership on Electrical Instrumentation Engineering across the 142,000-barrel-per-day Edmonton refinery which runs entirely on oil sands-based feedstocks and produces a high yield of light oils.

 

You will use your expertise to:

  • Liaise with projects, construction and maintenance teams to ensure engineering design, construction, testing and commissioning of projects are compliant to applicable Electrical and Instrumentation (E&I) codes and Suncor standards
  • Lead projects to evaluate E&I coordination study results, ETAP Model reviews and prepare written report of findings, recommendations and improvement opportunities.
  • Support the condition assessment on plant assets, leading technical consulting/troubleshooting, outage technical support, incident investigation and providing recommendations for resolution of system alarms and trips
  • Ensure Alberta Occupational Health and Safety requirements are met for asset engineering changes and performance and regulatory compliance
  • Lead reviews/approval of Engineering design, installation and commissioning of wide spectrum of motors, electrical heat trace controllers (EHT), motor control centers (MCCs), switch-gears, uninterruptible power source (UPS), variable frequency drives (VFD) 480V/4160V, Multilin relays etc.
  • Act as a project lead for various technology development projects through all of the stages of development from technical review, management presentations to plans for field piloting
  • Participate in equipment installation inspections, modifications, testing and commissioning of electrical systems and equipment for reliability and business unit project groups
  • Develop upgrade and migration strategies for Refinery electrical distribution communication networks and protection systems.
  • Define and approve selection of replacement instruments and electrical systems to help keep refinery systems standard and reliable.
  • Investigate and determine root causes of instrument and electrical system failures leading to process upset and unplanned plant outages
  • Attend project review meetings and MOC/hazard screening meetings to ensure solutions meet the requirements defined for the refinery control and electrical systems.

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Five years of related experience with electrical transmission, distribution protection, and industrial instrumentation
  • Expert level experience in ETAP, arc flash, short circuit and load flow study modules, fault analysis, report writing and interfacing in multidiscipline teams
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Registration with APEGA as a Professional Engineer or equivalent
  • Strong collaboration skills that enables you to build strong, positive relationships with diverse groups
  • Knowledgeable in the preparation and review of engineering deliverables, such as control narratives, single line diagrams, wiring diagrams, CWP etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify strategic improvement opportunities and act decisively to realize those opportunities
  • Demonstrated ability to lead E&I system lifecycle projects (MCC/VFD/Relays etc.), knowledge of electrical principles, systems, and switching procedures
  • Proven ability to perform quality assurance/quality control of engineering deliverables, improve procedures, lead improvement opportunities and adherence to MOC process

Preference for:

  • Understanding of CSA, IEEE, NERC regulations, and standards
  • Knowledge of process control networks and various control systems such as Honeywell Experion PKS/TDC3000 System, Triconex SIS, and Bentley Nevada
  • Strong analytical skills that enable you to make decisions with integrity in order to achieve the best results and deliver the most value
  • An adaptive work style with an ability to handle multiple priorities, challenging demands and function in a positive but dynamic work environment
  • Demonstrated  ability to effectively communicate and interact with others across a multitude of teams and business units to develop and build strong positive working relationships
  • A multidisciplinary background in engineering, maintenance and operations
