Summer Aboriginal Student, Production Technician

You will join one of our operating teams who will teach you how to safely monitor all processes and equipment within the area you are assigned. With the mentorship of qualified team members, you will gain valuable knowledge of working in a dynamic oil and gas environment.

You will use your expertise to:

  • Monitor all processes and equipment in your assigned unit area
  • Perform routine operating tasks (i.e. monitor levels, temperatures, pressures, etc.)
  • Monitor the operating area for abnormal conditions (i.e. mechanical or process related)
  • Perform basic troubleshooting and provide creative solutions
  • Perform product sampling as required
  • Assist in the preparation of equipment for maintenance
  • Perform housekeeping duties and operational maintenance as assigned
  • Provide summer relief for full-time Process Operators
  • Assist field personnel in responding to unit upset conditions ensuring that established procedures are followed
  • Log process changes and unit conditions in OLT (Operator Log Tool)

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Been enrolled as a 1st or 2nd year Indigenous student in a Power Engineering Technology or industry-related program at an accredited post-secondary institution, and returning to full-time studies in the fall
  • Attach your transcripts with your application

Preference for:

  • Oil and gas experience and previous safety training
  • A mechanical aptitude and skills to allow for a hands-on operation of plant equipment (i.e. pumps, compressors, heaters, etc.)
  • The ability to work and communicate in a team environment

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other meaningful information:

  • You will work out of our Edmonton refinery in Sherwood Park, located at 801 Petroleum Way (note: the Edmonton refinery is not accessible via public transportation, so you must have a valid driver’s licence and access to reliable transportation at the time of interview)
  • This is a four-month work term starting the end of April 2019 to the beginning of September
  • Some heavy lifting, use of ladders and working on elevated work sites such as scaffolds and towers
  • Able to perform work in a variety of different environments, both indoor and outdoor as well as within confined spaces
  • You don’t have any concerns with using a self-contained breathing apparatus
