Are you looking for an outstanding opportunity to succeed in an ever-changing and dynamic engineering role? In this role, you will provide continuous onsite technical support and guidance to operations, sustaining projects, risk management, and technology development.

You will use your expertise to:

  • Support expense projects and process changes, monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and provide support to ensure that operational targets are met, required corrective actions are communicated and perform effective follow-ups
  • Perform technical investigations and root cause analysis and provide technical feedback and recommendations to return the plant to normal operation after upsets
  • Perform required studies, problem definitions, and calculations for plant optimization
  • Develop tools to improve both process and equipment monitoring and performance projection
  • Perform calculations to identify required process conditions, production loss, emission spills and required chemicals
  • Compare existing plant operating conditions against design conditions, identify cause of deviation and area of improvement
  • Provide technical support for tasks such as: regulatory reporting, operational procedure reviews, management of change (MOC) execution, risk reviews, bottleneck identification and plant turnarounds
  • Support continuous improvement efforts through stewardship of the MOC process among the process engineering discipline
  • Handle development and maintenance of living process engineering documents and tools such as; process flow diagram (PFD), heat and material balance (H&MB), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID), TOE (safe operating limits)

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Two or more years of experience in process or contact engineering at an oilsands, refinery, petro-chemical and/or pipeline distributions facility
  • Experience facilitating risk assessments and hazard & operability studies (HAZOP)
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering
  • Registered or immediately eligible for registration with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) as a professional engineer
  • A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record

Preference for:

  • Experience at a SAGD facility
  • Familiar with P&ID's, PFD, H&MB, and other process related documentation
  • Knowledge of HYSYS, computer-based hydraulic packages and fluid hydraulic calculations
  • Knowledge of industry standards such as API, CSA, and ASME
  • Deep understanding of the business drivers for thermal heavy oil operations, operation of fired heater, oil separation and water treatment equipment
  • Understanding complex processes, and strive to develop and implement continuous improvement and creative process enhancements

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other important information:

  • You will work out of our Firebag location, which is our largest in situ operation and one of the largest in the world (and located 120 km northeast of Fort McMurray, Alberta)
  • This is a Fly-in/Fly-out (FIFO) camp-based position; you will FIFO from a Suncor hub location: Calgary/Edmonton, Alberta
  • The shift schedule is a 4 days on / 3 days off; 10-hour shifts
  • This position is safety sensitive
