Job Overview

Reporting to the manager of reclamation planning and field services, you will plan environmental and reclamation programs for Fort Hills. You will also assist with writing, editing or reviewing of monitoring and reclamation plans pertaining to Fort Hills, and provide scientific and technical advice on ecological conservation issues to assist in decision making and oil sands regulatory compliance.

Key Accountabilities

  • Responsible for planning environmental programs and management of reclamation (soil), surface and ground water systems
  • Identify hazards and design flaws, evaluate and contribute to both proactive and reactive controls put in place to mitigate short term and long term costs to both personnel and property
  • Provide technical oversight for planning of water monitoring and various environmental initiatives, and/or reclamation programs
  • Develop and recommend regulatory compliance strategies under the guidance of a more senior specialist or manager
  • Review and evaluate technical reports from contractors on monitoring, planning and other environmental programs related to reclamation e.g. soil surveys, mine reclamation and life of mine reclamation plans
  • Establishes priorities and performance targets aligned with business unit priorities and work plans

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education:

  • Bachelor or master of engineering or science in a related discipline
  • Working knowledge of oil sands regulations, approvals, standards, processes and procedures
  • Possess a valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record

Skills and Knowledge:

  • A combination of professional and technical knowledge related to environmental science practices and processes
  • The ability to support or lead multiple projects at a time and work independently under minimal supervision
  • Strong communication skills with the expectation of high demonstrating a continuous improvement mindset
  • Effectively impact a considerable number of internal and external stakeholders
  • Understand complex processes, and strive to develop and implement continuous improvement and creative process enhancements

Working Conditions

  • This is a camp-based position at the Fort Hills site
  • The shift schedule is a 7 days on / 7 days off rotation
