Automation Specialist, Autonomous Haulage System

Job Overview

Do you specialize in providing technical support coordination for comprehensive fleet management mine systems, the machine guidance system, equipment health monitoring systems, and the Autonomous Haulage System (AHS) applications? Reporting to the mine automation lead, you will also be responsible for ensuring the integrity and high availability of all mine automation system networks including switches, servers, database back-ups and disaster recovery.

Key Accountabilities

  • Support the operation and reliability of mine automation systems applications consisting of Modular FrontRunner, Dispatch 6, ProVision 3, MineCare 3, and Honeywell MEM across our Fort Hills operation
  • Represent automation operations in the factory acceptance test and site acceptance test of the AHS system and provide recommendations to AHS functional test plans to ensure thorough testing of systems before accepting custody
  •  Work closely with the implementation team to ensure the test team documents all test steps and parameters in the prescribed tracking system, ensuring test result traceability
  • Manage all changes with appropriate controls: MOC, ASCN, multi-stakeholder approval prior to implementing changes
  • Coordinate with mine dispatchers and vendors for application-related issues for prompt resolution; diagnose and resolve issues, clearly understand operating requirements, and modify software configurations to optimize use of the systems
  • Ensure that mine networks, switches, and servers are maintained as per recommended procedures, practices, patches and hotfixes are applied regularly
  • Perform and verify system back-ups, and implementation of disaster recovery plans
  • Develop and maintain SQL based dashboards and live reports; analyze report data to assess and correct performance and data quality deficiencies for systems
  • Performance assessment and reporting of mine automation systems
  • Define common toolsets at the process controls network (PCN) level to enable the cyber security metric and Key Performance Indicator stewardship at the strategic, tactical, and operational levels
  • Monitor metrics related to mine control system components performance and steward those in the right direction

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education:

  • Five or more years of technical experience with mine automation fleet management, equipment guidance, and equipment health monitoring systems in an operating site, preferably in a mining context
  • Experience with commissioning and startup of server-based applications
  • University degree in science, technology, engineering or math is preferred, or a combination of some post-secondary education and relevant work experience
  • Preference for a professional designation in Engineering (or ability to apply for one)

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Deep understanding of Modular FrontRunner, Dispatch, Provision and MineCare
  • Knowledge of mine dispatch systems and support applications, SQL servers
  • Knowledge of industry standards and methodologies, related to servers, networks and cybersecurity
  • Strong written and social skills and the ability to effectively interact with local and external development and support teams is essential
  • You have a proven ability to work in a team environment, where you easily build strong positive relationships
  • You are a great problem solver with strong analytical skills and can prioritize and lead work through collaborative relationships to ensure positive and timely outcomes

Working Conditions

  • This position has been identified as safety sensitive
  • You will be required to provide some evening and weekend phone support to support plant operations, as needed
  • This is a camp-based position at the Fort Hills site
  • The shift schedule is a 7 days on / 7 days off rotation
