Job Overview

Reporting to the lead of process control, you will be responsible for the integration of control and safety systems during the factory acceptance testing (FAT) and commissioning and start-up (C&SU) phases of our Fort Hills project. Once the plant is operational, you will transition to ongoing control systems operations support.

Key Accountabilities

  • Ensure control and safety systems site acceptance tests (SATs) are executed as planned
  • Lead the execution for the area control and safety systems loop and perform function checks for safe, reliable plant start-up; perform loop and function checks as required
  • Ensure that test plans and procedures are implemented correctly and testing meets the requirements as defined by procedures
  • Coordinate with other disciplines for pre-commissioning and commissioning activities and represent your area in commissioning and start up meetings
  • Support operations, reliability and maintenance to maximize safe production by ensuring 24x7 availability
  • Troubleshoot the control system configuration problems and download the configuration changes
  • Investigate the plant nuisance trips, configuration issues and provide recommended solutions
  • Manage key performance indicators (alarms, bypasses, trips, etc.) and work with various disciplines to put a plan in place for improvements
  • Manage control system maintenance, and implement backup and disaster recovery plans; complete system upgrades

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education

  • Minimum of 10 years of control systems experience
  • Experience with configuration, commissioning, operations and maintenance of Honeywell Experion PKS DCS and/or ControlLogix PLC
  • Configuration and maintenance experience with Triconex/Trident/TriGP SIS systems and control system networking experience
  • Bachelor of science in engineering or engineering technologist diploma
  • Registered or eligible to register with APEGA or ASET
  • Possess a valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record

Skills and Knowledge

  • Technical knowledge and hands-on maintenance and configuration experience with distributed control system, safety instrumented systems, and programmable logic controllers
  • Knowledgeable about regulatory and discrete controls, including motor control, valve control and other regulatory controls
  • Strong technical knowledge of applicable automation industry standards, SIL assessment and LOPA methodologies, and alarm management guidelines
  • Knowledge of designing and maintaining communications between various control systems using industrial communication protocols like OPC and MODBUS is an asset
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work with the main automation contractor, EPCs, vendors and project teams, in a multi-discipline work environment
  • Self-motivated individual with excellent communication, analytical, and organizational skills

Working Conditions

  • This position has been identified as safety sensitive
  • This is a camp-based position at the Fort Hills site
  • The shift schedule is a seven days on/ seven days off rotation
