Manager, Maintenance Utilities

Job Overview

Reporting to the director of fixed plant maintenance, you will assume a leadership role for the maintenance execution function. You will be responsible for safety leadership – supporting Suncor’s Journey to Zero, building an environment where people can develop and reach their potential, championing efforts to achieve “world class” equipment performance in terms of safety, reliability, availability and cost, ensuring that Suncor’s “Operational Excellence Management System” is effectively implemented (OEMS).

 Key Accountabilities

  • Ensure safety compliance and champion department awareness in Suncor’s values, Operational Discipline behaviours and Life Saving Rules 
  • Implement site maintenance programs including predictive, preventative and emergency work procedures and protocols
  • As a core member of the Utilities Cross Functional team, champion adherence to Maintenance and Reliability standards and processes
  • Monitor performance of the maintenance execution function by rigorously tracking and reviewing appropriate Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) – ensure participation in Cross-Functional Teams (CFT’s) to improve performance when a need is identified
  • Manage Department Personnel including Area Managers, Supervisors, Multi-Crafts, and Administration
  • Assist in developing site long range operational expenditure plan and ensure repairs and maintenance costs are controlled to agreed budgetary levels 
  • Implement reliability improvement procedures, projects and practices
  • Assist in establishing and implementing training programs in order to develop and validate competency of Suncor and contractor embedded maintenance personnel 
  • Manage and control the maintenance budget for personnel, equipment and materials as assigned
  • Ensure that unscheduled outages due to equipment failure are mitigated operations in particular those units that are production impacts 
  • Implement reliability based techniques to all key plants including preventative and predictive maintenance practices where relevant
  • Ensure that contractor management is such that only competent, well trained personnel enter the site and in particular demonstrate a high level of safety performance 
  • Recruit and train staff as required to meet the organizational and individual development needs of the team, responsible to develop and maintain a productive, respectful team culture consistent with Suncor’s Operational Discipline Behaviors and Values 
  • Experience managing complex unit outages and Turnarounds
  • Supervise emergency repair, routine maintenance and preventative maintenance of plan equipment to maintain the mechanical condition of the plant and improve operating efficiency in a safe manne

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education:

  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in maintenance management in an industrial process environment, including oil and gas, petrochemical, power generation, mining, refinery or other process operation 
  • Bachelor of Science in mechanical, chemical or other applicable engineering discipline or journeyman trades certification
  • Project management accreditation would be considered an asset (MMP, PMP)

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Solid interpersonal and oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience with the ability to deliver on aggressive timelines
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage conflicting priorities and execute with limited supervision
  • Excellent analytical skills and ability to think strategically
  • Familiar with maintenance business processes and establishing maintenance strategies and programs – based on risk evaluation and risk management

Working Conditions

  • This is a camp-based position at the Fort Hills site 
  • The shift schedule is a 4 days on 3 days off rotation
  • Work schedule and location may change as needed to meet business requirement
