Power Systems Electrical Specialist

LOCATION: Fort Hills Wood Buffalo, Alberta (CA-AB)

Are you an electrical and power systems expert? In this role, you will support the maintenance, operations, and reliability of our Fort Hills assets by performing electrical maintenance and operations activities safely and efficiently. You will also support commissioning and start-up activities on new electrical assets.
You will use your expertise to:

  • Execute maintenance activities including installation, troubleshooting and repairs to all systems and equipment to a high quality to ensure optimum reliability and availability
  • Ensure that preventative maintenance guidelines are adhered to and maintain complete and accurate records associated with the technical and preventative aspects of this position
  • Maintain and test electrical substation equipment and apparatus using software driven testing methods and procedures to optimize efficiency and as per issued work orders
  • Verify equipment, power system operating schemes, as well as SCADA/RTU and communication interface to HVCC and remote terminals
  • Perform operational duties on the transmission and distribution system
  • Provide stewardship and support to other business unit electrical departments upon leadership request and approval (i.e. switching assessments and electrical competency audits etc.
  • Setting and performance qualification of microprocessor protective relays. Can include Protection lab testing works and development for new and existing systems.

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Experience as an electrical engineering technologists with a power system electrician and/or electrician journeyman certification, with a minimum of five years’ experience working on high voltage electrical systems in mining, oil and gas or a similar industrial environment
  • A deep understanding of commissioning and start-up, maintenance, and operations as related to the safe and efficient production of bitumen and the electrical system to drive and support
  • In-depth knowledge of electrical principles, systems, switching procedures, the Alberta Electrical Utility Code (AEUC), the application of safety and technical requirements of the aforementioned and of Suncor quality standards
  • A basic understanding of AESO regulatory requirements for electrical transmission systems
  • A valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record

  • A desire to ask what could go wrong and check for out-of-the-ordinary conditions and learn to anticipate potential problems
  • A continuous improvement mindset with strong analytical and decision-making capacity

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other meaningful information:

  • You will work out of our camp-based Fort Hills mining site, located in Alberta’s Athabasca region, 90 kilometres north of Fort McMurray, Alberta
  • The shift schedule is a 7 days on /7 days off rotation (7 days on, 7 days off, 12 hour shifts)
  • This position is safety sensitive
