Job Overview

Suncor’s oil sands mining projects, located in Alberta’s Athabasca region, 90 kilometres north of Fort McMurray, are projected to produce a reliable, long-term energy supply while leveraging technology to minimize environmental and social impacts of resource development. Reporting to the manager, oil sands sustaining, and working out of our Calgary office, you will create and develop mine and tailings plans and designs while working in an exciting interdisciplinary environment. You will support Suncor’s Millennium and North Steepbank mining operations, as well as future oil sands projects.

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead the development and optimization of long range (+ 5 years) mine and tailings plans
  • Develop project scopes and designs to support mining and tailing operations
  • Conduct strategic economic studies of engineering and business options available to the company and make recommendations to management
  • Mentor junior staff and support them in their development
  • Facilitate collaboration with various technical groups to ensure consistency with reclamation plans and stakeholder groups
  • Benchmark and analyze operational performance

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education:

  • 8 years or more of mining engineering/planning experience, preferably in the oil sands
  • Experience in operations and with regulatory submissions is preferred
  • A multidisciplinary background in mining, reclamation, geotechnical / geological engineering and tailings planning
  • Engineering degree in Mining, Civil, Geological or equivalent
  • P.M.P certification is desirable

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of CAD and/or Mine Planning software such as Minescape and XPAC
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work closely with others at various levels within the organization
  • Strong trouble-shooting and analytical skills with a continuous improvement mindset
  • You are a highly motivated, self-starter who is able to provide personal and technical mentorship to junior staff members
  • Continually seek greater knowledge about the systems, processes and hazards in the workplace, in order to understand not just what you do but why you do it

Working Conditions

  • This position is a staff role based in the Calgary office with infrequent travel to site on an as-required basis
