Welder, Maintenance Secondary Extraction

LOCATION: Fort Hills, Wood Buffalo, Alberta (CA-AB)

Job Overview

Are you a certified welder, passionate about joining our Fort Hills maintenance team? Reporting to the shift supervisor, you will support our mine maintenance team by safely maintaining the heavy equipment fleet to ensure optimum reliability and availability of the assets.

Key Accountabilities

  • Execute all planned and break in welding repairs, build-up for line-boring and fabrication, as required
  • Perform minor welding and/or structural repairs
  • Provide preventative maintenance support in the field and shop
  • Assist with, and operate essential rigging for moving equipment using mobile equipment and lifting devices
  • Examine welds and ensure that they meet our standards and/or specifications
  • Actively participate in post-event failure analysis and root cause discussions, and participate in developing solutions
  • Read work orders, technical manuals, blueprints and diagrams related to the work assignment; write and review work scope and hazard/risk assessment
  • Clean and prepare base metals using bevellers, grinders, air nibblers, and cleaning chemicals

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education

  • Three or more years of post-apprenticeship experience maintaining mining heavy equipment in a maintenance environment with a valid B-Pressure and Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) welding ticket
  • B-Pressure welding on stainless, chromium carbide overlay as well as carbon steel valid CWB certification
  • Paraffinic Froth Treatment (PFT) experience is an asset
  • Valid Alberta Journeyman Welder Certificate or an Interprovincial Red Seal Journeyman Welder Certificate; attach your Journeyman / Red Seal ticket with your application in order to be considered
  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • Possess a valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record

Skills and Knowledge

  • Ability to read and interpret equipment specifications, engineering drawings, blueprints, charts, and tables, or study sample parts as required
  • In-depth knowledge and application of technical requirements and quality standards and a deep understanding of maintenance and operations
  • A strong safety and environmental mindset: safety training, knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and environmental standards and guidelines
  • You continually seek greater knowledge about the systems, processes and hazards in the workplace; a strong dedication to continuous improvement within safe work practices, procedures, and standards to ensure safe and reliable work execution
  • You constantly ask what could go wrong and check for out-of-the-ordinary conditions and strive to anticipate potential problems

Working Conditions

  • This position has been identified as safety sensitive
  • This is a camp-based position at the Fort Hills site
  • The shift schedule is a seven days on/seven days off rotation (seven days on, seven days off, seven nights on, seven nights off; 12 hour shifts)
  • You will be required to perform some heavy lifting, use of ladders and working on elevated work sites such as scaffolds and towers with the ability to perform in a variety of different environments both indoor and outdoor as well as within confined spaces
