Control Systems Specialist

Working closely with the Automation Lead, you will provide technical support to automation, process engineering, operations, maintenance, reliability, and other energy and utilities partners.

You will use your expertise to:

  • Implement configuration changes, problem solve, and maintain current process control systems
  • Analyze and develop continuous improvement techniques to optimize reliability and performance
  • Support system development, management, and sustainment related to Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
  • Apply Suncor and industry standards (ISA, IEC, CSA)
  • Participate in Incident Management (IM), Corrective Actions (CA), Process Hazard Analysis (PHAs), job safety analysis, and Management of Change (MOCs)
  • Build and support automation methodologies, standards and guidelines
  • Provide support to the alarm management and critical system defeat procedure
  • Support the BMS proof test, major turnaround projects, short pit stops, unit start-up after trip, business unit project commissioning and start-ups
  • Adhere to and apply our safety policies, standards and values in the execution of your work

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Five years of relevant experience
  • A post-secondary education in Instrumentation and Automation
  • Basic Process Control System (BPCS), PLC and Safety Systems (hardware and software configuration) experience
  • A continuous improvement mindset and driven to seek greater knowledge and understanding
  • A valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record

Preference for:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical, Electronics, Process Control, or Chemical)
  • Been registered, or are eligible to register, as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) or the Association of Science & Engineering Technology (ASET) Professionals of Alberta
  • Experience working on control systems of Honeywell Experion PKS/TPS/TDC3000 System, ABB Advant Controller/800xA, Siemens Moore Quadlog, GE Mark VI and Rockwell PLC (PLC5, Controllogix)
  • Experience in a power plant or co-generation plant with gas and steam turbine control systems, boiler controls, and boiler burner management system design, commissioning, maintenance or operations
  • Ability to install, solve and maintain communications between various control systems using industrial communication protocols like OPC, Modbus serial, and MODBUS/TCP

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other important information:

  • You will work out of our Base Plant site in Fort McMurray, Alberta
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with a rotational 24/7 on–call support
  • This position is safety sensitive
  • If you reside outside of Fort McMurray, relocation of your primary residence to within 60 km of Fort McMurray is mandatory. Relocation support will be provided; we offer highly competitive housing assistance to eligible individuals
