Job Overview

Reporting to the manager, process engineering and development, you will be responsible to identify strategic and cost effective initiatives to improve safety, quality and production of the assigned assets and provide technical expertise in the development of scoping studies, unit performance plans, and complex troubleshooting.

Key Accountabilities

  • Comply with all our environment health and safety policies, standards and procedures
  • Provide technical support and advice to contact engineers while achieving safe, reliable, and efficient unit operation as well as develop scoping studies, unit performance plans and troubleshooting
  • Ensure objectives and deadlines are met during project lifecycle according to business and project requirements and standards
  • Act as a technical interface for engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) developed, design basis memorandum and scoping studies and oversee EPC’s front end engineering design and scope change for area projects
  • Facilitate project risk assessments such as hazard and operability study (HAZOP)
  • Provide expert level advice during pre-startup safety reviews when required
  • Support annual production planning assumptions used by regional planning and optimization as well as site wide energy and water committees
  • Give technical feedback into process inspection scopes and support turnaround/outage through process studies and evaluations as a result of inspection findings
  • Provide mentorship and support to junior engineers in their development

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education:

  • Five or more years of experience in the oil and gas or similar industry; experience within extraction or utilities operation is an asset
  • A multidisciplinary background in engineering, maintenance and operations is an asset
  • Bachelor degree in chemical engineering
  • Registered or immediately eligible for registration with the association of professional engineers and geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) as a professional engineer
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
  • Sound knowledge of the oil sands business and processes
  • Well-developed critical thinking, with an ability to apply logic and challenge assumptions, conclusions and make appropriate recommendations
  • Ability to provide personal and technical mentorship to junior staff members
  • Ability to plan and organize work; take initiative to ensure that projects and tasks are completed on time and correctly
  • You collaborate with others in order to achieve the best results and deliver the most value

Working Conditions

  • If you reside outside of Fort McMurray, relocation of your primary residence to within 60 km of Fort McMurray is mandatory
  • Relocation support will be provided; we offer highly competitive housing assistance to eligible applicants
