Reporting to the Health and Safety Manager, you will be responsible for acting as a subject matter expert and provide support in the interpretation and application of work scope, specific to health and safety (H&S) legal and regulatory requirements, incident investigation, root cause analysis, audits and assessments and interact with H&S regulators.

You will use your expertise to:

  • Assist and improve the implementation of the H&S project execution plan
  • Contribute and participate in the contractor management process to perform H&S responsibilities
  • Collaborate with site leaders to support the implementation and sustainment of Turnaround, H&S programs, regional standards, safe work practices, orientations, and campaigns
  • Provide generalist support while coaching and mentoring during the pre-planning, execution, and post-execution portion of Suncor’s Turnarounds
  • Perform hazard assessments and audit contractor safety management systems / scope specific Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) plans
  • Interpret, apply and monitor compliance of H&S regulations that govern the projects specific work scope to assist leaders in reflecting due diligence in decision-making
  • Conduct incident investigations (as requested) and inform and coach incident owners and leaders in root cause analysis and assignment of corrective action
  • Perform audits and coach and mentor leaders in processes such as serious injury fatality (SIF) control verifications, field level hazard assessment audits, safety observations, and inspections

We’d like to review your application if you have…

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Five years of safety-related and/or turnaround-related field experience with relevant education combined with at least one recognized safety designation (NCSO, CRSP, OHS)
  • A licenced investigator certification or you are working towards completion for Alberta-based projects
  • A High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • Knowledge of large scale construction hazards and controls in the context of the applicable H&S legislation
  • Dedication to perform an incident investigation, root cause analysis, hazard assessment, audits, field H&S assessments and interact with regulators, as required
  • Training in TapRooT or an equivalent method of root cause analysis
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to influence others without authority
  • Excellent organizational skills with computer knowledge in SAP and Microsoft Office applications
  • A self-starter who is results-oriented who is able to work with limited supervision and take the lead as required
  • Exceptional interpersonal, customer service, analytical, presentation and problem-solving skills
  • The ability to work independently while handling multiple assignments at a time, establish priorities and meet schedules

Preference for:

  • Oil and gas experience

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other meaningful information:

  • You will work out of our Base Plant Mine in Fort McMurray, Alberta
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday
  • If you reside outside of Fort McMurray, relocation of your primary residence to within 60 km of Fort McMurray is mandatory. Relocation support will be provided; we offer highly competitive housing assistance to eligible individuals
