Industrial Hygienist Student

In this role you will provide important support and document control within the industrial hygiene team and you’ll have the opportunity to provide advice along with support to the various operation areas in order to meet regulatory requirements.

You will use your expertise to:

  • Engage in multiple projects in different operating areas within Industrial Hygiene
  • Build and support relationships with business units to ensure compliance to industrial hygiene standards
  • Perform sampling, field inspections, surveys and site visits to various areas
  • Analyze data in the Cority database and perform statistical analysis
  • Enter data into the Cority database and ensure all information is entered accurately
  • Assist with the development of documentation: written programs, safe work instructions, standards, etc. as well as design, develop or present industrial hygiene training materials
  • Complete hazard identification surveys and assist with performing Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and Respiratory Protection Equipment (RPE) audits
  • Conduct surveys (noise, lighting, ergonomics, ventilation, welding, hydrocarbons, NORM etc.)

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Current enrolment in a formal co-op or internship program in 3rd or 4th year Occupational Health and Safety (Industrial Hygiene, Safety, Occupational Health, Kinesiology etc.) or Sciences (Toxicology, Health Sciences, Chemical or Environmental Engineering with previous exposure to health and safety regulations/codes or standards) at an accredited post-secondary institution, and returning to full-time studies after the work term

  • A valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record

Preference for:

  • Extraordinary computer skills with intermediate to advanced proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel
  • Understanding and working knowledge of pertinent provincial and federal regulatory Acts and Regulations (OHS,  etc.) would be beneficial
  • A self-starter with experience in Safety/Industrial Hygiene: hazard recognition, evaluation, and control principles; engineering fundamentals; management; inspection and audit processes; measurement techniques
  • Experience working in a similar industrial hygiene support capacity in an industrial facility
  • A continuous improvement mindset and are able to seek greater knowledge and understanding of the systems, process and hazards in the workplace
  • A zero-tolerance for shortcuts, and if the procedure is incorrect, you fix it

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other meaningful information:

  • You will work out of our Base Plant Mine in Fort McMurray, Alberta
  • This is an 8-month work term, from May 2019 – December 2019
  • You will provide on-call general support for the Industrial Hygiene team, including driving to and from sites
  • Working after hours and during weekends may be required
