Operator Trainee | Power Engineer

Are you a highly motivated operator looking to gain valuable mentorship within our Energy and Utilities team? In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining the safe and reliable operation of the powerhouse facility. You will actively learn all operating posts within the energy and utilities progression and take on growing levels of responsibility at the site.

You will use your expertise to:

  • Perform safe and efficient operation duties
  • Ensure facility-related issues beyond the scope of this position are quickly brought to the attention of the shift supervisor
  • Prepare and complete daily area logs and communicate significant changes and findings
  • Engage with maintenance and contract personnel performing maintenance and other duties
  • Participate in detailed shift change communication
  • Ensure the safety of personnel working within the assigned area and that process and policies are followed during operations

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Field operations experience in the energy industry
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain and interpret critical operational information
  • Ability to make timely decisions associated with process upsets and work with others in a team environment
  • A continuous improvement mindset and are able to seek greater knowledge and understanding of the systems, process, and hazards in the workplace
  • Your 3rd Class Power Engineer Certification; ABSA certified
  • A High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • A valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record

Preference for:

  • Experience in the energy and utilities industry
  • A strong understanding of maintenance, operations and process safety standards related to the safe and efficient operation of the assets
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of hazardous energy and associated work permit practices
  • In-depth knowledge of all regulatory ABSA requirements
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other important information:

  • You will work out of our Base Plant site in Fort McMurray, Alberta
  • The shift schedule is a 6 days on/6 days off rotation (3 days on, 3 nights on, 6 days off; 12-hour shifts)
  • This position is safety sensitive
  • You will be required to perform some heavy lifting, use ladders and work on elevated work sites such as scaffolds and towers with the ability to perform in a variety of different environments both indoor and outdoor as well as within confined spaces
