Protection Engineer, Electrical

Working closely with the Manager of Reliability Transmission and Distribution (T&D), you will support the reliability engineering team on the initiatives related to maintenance and improvements for protection system associated with high voltage electrical equipment in the T&D jurisdiction at our base plant and in-situ Firebag sites.

You will use your expertise to:

  • Drive compliance to all relevant Suncor policies and standards including the management of change process and maintenance processes
  • Assist with technical issues for improvements, design reviews and specifications, troubleshooting or failure analysis related to protection relays and systems
  • Assess protection isolation procedures to allow safe execution of maintenance protection work without disturbing in-service system
  • Develop scopes of work as it relates to protection relays and systems maintenance/improvements as part of the planning process for special outages, turnarounds and annual event calendar
  • Assess protection relays and system testing results during preventive maintenance activities
  • Support the follow-up of the protection system preventive maintenance execution and propose applicable optimization/improvements
  • Perform root cause analysis related to failure events associated with protection systems and define applicable corrective /mitigation measures
  • Support our reliability improvement plan and processes and reinforce a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration
  • Drive a structured approach to uphold all health, safety and environment standards, and ensure effective actions and programs are in place to sustain safety and reliability performance goals

We’d like to review your application if you have…

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Four years of related experience working in reliability and maintenance of protection relays and systems
  • Experience with the development of predictive and preventative maintenance strategies for protection systems
  • A Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering with a focus on protection relays and systems
  • Been registered or are immediately eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)
  • A valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record
  • Proven use of key reliability processes such as reliability centered maintenance, root cause analysis and failure analysis
  • Deep understanding of design codes and standards applicable to the electrical systems (e.g. CSA 22.3, AUEC, NETA, CSA-463, CSA-462)
  • Strong knowledge of protection relay types and functionalities as well as special protection schemes
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and at least one industry standard enterprise resource planning tool (preferably SAP)

  • The ability to anticipate potential problems and check for out-of-the-ordinary conditions, as well as having a strong sense of accountability
  • The ability to provide personal and technical mentorship to junior staff members by building strong, positive relationships

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other meaningful information:

  • You will work out of our Base Plant facility in Fort McMurray, Alberta
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday
  • This position is safety sensitive
  • This position is security sensitive which requires you to clear a criminal history check
  • If you reside outside of Fort McMurray, relocation of your primary residence to within 60 km of Fort McMurray is mandatory
  • Relocation support will be provided; we offer highly competitive housing assistance to eligible individuals
