Safety Engineer | Process Safety Management Engineer

Do you have a true passion for using your technical expertise to support Process Safety Management (PSM)? The scope of this role is broad, as it is responsible for the implementation and improvement of several PSM and Operational Excellence Management System (OEMS) elements across Suncor’s facilities in the Wood Buffalo Region (e.g. Management of Change, Technical Operating Envelop, Process Safety Information and Process Hazard Analysis (PHA)).

You will use your expertise to:

  • Work with various teams to drive maturity of PSM programs to achieve a continuous reduction in unplanned events and incidents across the Wood Buffalo Region
  • Provide advice and guidance on PSM/OEMS elements and act as a subject matter expert
  • Lead and facilitate PHA/Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) evaluations of existing processes and new processes
  • Perform and interpret quantitative risk assessments and consequence analysis to drive consistent quantitative severity estimations
  • Ensure compliance with PSM and OEMS technical standards including updating governance documents (procedures, business process manual, etc.)
  • Monitor and develop key performance indicators to track PSM progress
  • Participate in OEMS self-assessments (gap analysis) and audits to implement and recommend gap closure plans and strategies for OEMS elements
  • Lead and/or participate in process safety technical networks

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • 10+ years of relevant experience in engineering, operations, and/or maintenance at an oil sands or refinery operation
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering; Chemical or Mechanical preferred
  • Registered or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer or Engineer-in-Training with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)
  • Knowledge and competency with the PHA/HAZOP processes and methodologies
  • Familiarity with Safety Instrumented Functions (SIF) and associated Safety Instrumented System (SIS), Cause and Effect Charts, Control System Narrative and Safety Integrity Level (SIL)
  • A valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record

Preference for:

  • PHA facilitator certification
  • Ability to plan, delegate, and organize tasks to consistently produce results
  • Ability to communicate with clarity, impact and passion to help drive a growing PSM program, and to collaborate across all levels of the organization to enable and drive change
  • Proven proficiency with analytics, such as process plant data trending/data analysis tools and Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) 
  • A continuous improvement mindset and the ability to seek greater knowledge and understanding of the systems, process, and hazards in the workplace
  • Strong non-authoritative leadership and planning skills
  • The ability to work independently and within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Commitment to safety first; communicates safety concerns; promotes a safe work environment based on established safety standards and training

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other important information:

  • You will work out of our Base Plant Operations in Fort McMurray, Alberta
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday
  • If you reside outside of Fort McMurray, relocation of your primary residence to within 60 km of Fort McMurray is mandatory. Relocation support will be provided; we offer highly competitive housing assistance to eligible individuals
